Definition of

District

Neighborhood

A district is a territorial delimitation.

District is a term that comes from the Latin districtus which, in turn, has its origin in the word disstringĕre ( "to separate" ). The concept is used to name the delimitations that allow a territorial region to be subdivided to organize the administration, public function and political and civil rights.

For example: “The official candidate won in the most populated district of the province” , “The residents of the district are worried about the increase in robbery cases” , “We are lucky to live in the most developed district of the city , with modern industries and quality infrastructure.”

District according to country

The definition of a district varies according to the country. In Paraguay , a district is the smallest political-administrative constituency, since it is a subdivision of a department. The Capital District is not part of any of the Paraguayan departments: it is the national capital, Asunción .

In Peru , the districts have the same particularity regarding their political-administrative condition. In this case, districts are subdivisions of a province. In Costa Rica , the districts are third-level entities according to the national political organization.

Classification according to type

In addition to all of the above, we find the fact that there are various types of districts. Thus, first of all, we can talk about what is known as electoral districts, which are those divisions that are made within a country on the occasion of the elections that take place there.

A clear example is the sixty districts into which Chile is divided in preparation for the aforementioned elections. In this way, it is established that each of them must elect two deputies and two senators to represent them and be part of the National Congress.

Districts are represented on many maps.

On the other hand, we cannot ignore talking about what is known as municipal districts, which are those parts into which a city or municipality is divided simply for mere administration issues. In the case of Spain, for example, it is established that provincial capitals with more than 175,000 inhabitants, municipalities with more than 250,000 inhabitants and also the capitals of autonomous communities with more than 175,000 inhabitants will have this type of districts.

However, it is also determined that all those cities with more than 75,000 residents may have municipal districts that their city councils decide, taking into account certain important factors.

In this way, we find examples of cities with districts in this category: Alcalá de Henares, Barcelona, Granada, Madrid, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Seville, Granada or Jerez de la Frontera, among others.

a federal district

A federal district , on the other hand, is known as the space that is governed by a sovereign and federal State , but that is not part of any province or other subdivision of said federation. This means that the central State has exclusive and direct jurisdiction over the federal district, although it usually delegates certain functions to a regional government .

The Federal District of Mexico , also known as Mexico City or Mexico City , is the capital of Mexico and head of the various federal powers of the country, constituting the most populated urban agglomeration in America.
