stones

He who extracts stones from a quarry is called a stonemason.

The notion of stonemason has several uses. The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) recognizes five meanings, some of them linked to the region of the speakers.

A stonemason, for example, is someone who is dedicated to extracting stones from a quarry or carving them for use in a construction . As can be seen, it is necessary to analyze terms such as stone and quarry to understand precisely what the concept refers to.

What are stones

A stone is a compact mineral substance that has a certain hardness. It is an inorganic material: that is, it lacks organs for life.

The place from which the stones used for different purposes are extracted is called a quarry . Quarries are open-air spaces that are exploited on an industrial level until their useful life is exhausted.

At this point we can return to the definition of a stonemason. This is the name given to the individual whose job consists of extracting the material found in a quarry.

On the other hand, we pointed out that a stonemason is one who carves stones for a construction . In this way it can be stated that the stonemason's trade is stonemasonry , as this art of carving is mentioned.

The activity of the stonemason

It is important to keep in mind that the work of the stonemason, in the two cases mentioned, has been losing preponderance over time . This is due to the introduction of technology and the mechanization of the different processes linked to stonemasonry.

However, the participation of a stonemason is still relevant in the tasks carried out to cover facades or to restore certain buildings , to refer to two possibilities. The intervention can begin with the act of extracting the stone from the quarry, go through cutting the blocks and regulating the shapes and reaching the finish.

Although the craft is rare today, centuries ago it was key and allowed the creation of works of enormous value that continue to be admired. Notable among them are the monolithic sculptures known as moai , which are located on the Chilean island of Rapa Nui . There are more than nine hundred statues that were sculpted by stonemasons of the Rapanui people.

Gardening

In some countries, a flowerbed is an area delimited with bricks, stones or logs that presents plants and flowers.

Park or garden painting

In Mexico , Panama , Cuba , Argentina , Uruguay and other countries , a flowerbed is a painting that is in an orchard, a park, a garden or a public space. Cuadro, in this framework, is a sector of tilled land that is usually decorated with plants and flowers.

A flower bed of this type is an area delimited by stones, bricks , logs or other objects that usually have an ornamental purpose. Although most flower beds are square , there are also circular beds , triangular beds and irregularly shaped beds , among others.

The beds require good drainage for the subsistence of the species they house. They must also have quality land.
