Bell

Sound

A bell rings when struck.

A bell is an inverted cup-shaped instrument that rings when struck . The etymological origin of the term is linked to the Italian region of Campania , where this object was first used.

It can be said that the bell is a percussion instrument that emits a single note. For example: “The church bell is damaged” , “The ringing of a bell was heard and, minutes later, most of the residents were gathered in the main square” , “The man went to the door and rang a bell to call your animals.”

Types of bells

There are various types of bells. Some are very small and are used as accessories in suits or clothing . Others can weigh several tons and be installed in temples or other types of buildings.

The use of bells is also very diverse. They are usually used to make calls or summons (indicating the time of mass and summoning the faithful, telling the time, etc.) and to commemorate important events.

Bells allow you to give notices and make calls.

Other uses of the notion

The notion of bell is used, on the other hand, to name the object that has a similar shape to this instrument (that is, its lower part is wider and more open). That is why there is a household appliance called an extractor hood , whose function is to eliminate smoke and grease suspended in the air. The extractor hood is installed above the kitchen or stove and has an extractor fan and a filter.

In Argentina , the person who remains outside the scene of a robbery with the aim of alerting his accomplices to the arrival of the police is known as a bell: “We believe there was someone acting as a bell outside the building.”

Flared pants

Likewise, there are also so-called bell bottom pants . As their name indicates, they are those that are identified by the fact that their bottoms are presented with that shape, hence we can say that they are wider in that part than in the rest of the leg, even covering the entire foot.

The comfort they offer as well as the ability to hide both very thin legs and very thick ones is what is achieved with these garments, which achieved their greatest success in the 1970s. It should also be noted that they were created by the designer British Mary Quant , for both men and women.

Expressions with the term

Furthermore, we must not forget that there are various expressions in the colloquial language of different regions that use the term bell. Thus, for example, there is the verbal phrase “let the bells fly,” which is used to refer to something being celebrated with great joy and jubilation.

Similarly, there is also the phrase “to toll the bell.” This has a marked religious meaning since it is based on the fact that churches play those instruments when a funeral is going to be celebrated. Hence, when this expression is used, what is being said is that a person has died.

To these two expressions we should add a third, also widely used in the colloquial sphere: “hearing bells” . This is used when it means that there is knowledge of certain non-public facts from certain rumors or through some sources.
