The notion of burrito has several meanings. It appears in gastronomy , botany , zoology and orthopedics , and is even a fairly common nickname in Argentine soccer.

The term is the diminutive of donkey . A donkey or donkey , on the other hand, is a mammal that belongs to the group of equidae and is characterized by its long ears. A burrito, in this way, can be a small-sized donkey .

The Mexican burrito

In Mexican cuisine, the burrito is a food prepared by filling a wheat flour tortilla with meat, cheese, and other ingredients . The tortilla in question is rolled to contain the filling.

The history of burritos' names is often a source of debate. There are those who say that, at the time of the Mexican Revolution , there was a man who toured Ciudad Juárez on a donkey selling these stuffed tortillas. This is how “burrito food” began to become known.

Another version maintains that the burrito receives this name because it resembles rolled blankets carried on the back of a donkey . Some even claim that the donkey is called this way because it is similar to the donkey's ear .

The burrito tortilla is prepared with wheat flour, water and, usually, some fatty substance (butter or oil ). Beyond its filling, which can be varied, it is usually accompanied with beans.

An aromatic plant used as a flavoring and for infusions

Burrito or burro is also the common name for Aloysia polystachya , a shrub native to South America . It can reach a height of 1.3 meters and has leaves that end in a point.

Infusion

Burrito leaves can be added to the mate.

It is common for burrito to be used to give a distinctive flavor to tereré or mate , combining it with yerba mate leaves. It can also be used to make an infusion known as burrito tea .

Birds and insects called burrito

Not only small donkeys are referred to as burritos. Birds that make up the genus Laterallus , for example, are called chicks , redfish or burritos . The same is true for species that are part of the genus Porzana .

Rhyephenes humeralis is an insect of the order Coleoptera, colloquially called rockhorse or burrito . The larvae feed on wood, while the adult specimens eat plants.

An instrument used in orthopedics

There is another meaning of burrito recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) in its dictionary . In this case, the term is used in Bolivian territory.

The burrito is an orthopedic device used by those who have difficulty walking. What the donkey or walker does is provide support to facilitate movement.

Burrito in football

Finally, it cannot be overstated that several Argentine soccer players are nicknamed "Burrito." The most famous is Ariel "Burrito" Ortega , who shone for River Plate , played soccer in Spain , Italy and Turkey and stood out for the Argentine national team (playing in the 1994 , 1998 and 2002 World Cups ).

Juan Manuel Martínez y Diego Rivero son otros futbolistas apodados «Burrito».
