Definition of

Breeze

Wind

The breeze is a low intensity wind.

The breeze is a wind of low intensity : that is, it blows with little force. In the everyday speech of some countries, precisely, one of the synonyms for breeze is "little wind" .

For example: “I love the evening breeze by the sea,” “It's hot, but luckily there is a very pleasant breeze,” “The breeze then turned into a gale.”

A type of wind that is produced by the uneven heating of the relief through the action of the sun is also called a breeze. This causes different air masses to move vertically, generating a pressure imbalance and vacuums. From this situation, other air masses move to occupy the voids generated by the low pressure and thus restore balance.

Types of breeze

In this framework, it is possible to distinguish between the sea breeze and the mountain and valley breezes . The sea breeze is produced by the different cooling and heating of the surface and water . During the day, hot air rises due to the heating of the Earth, while cold air arrives from the sea or large lakes to compensate. When it gets dark the weather becomes easier to tolerate, since you can see a stage in which temperatures equalize.

Throughout the night, the mechanism explained in the previous paragraph is reversed, given that the water is at a higher temperature even though the wind blows at a generally lower speed, because the differences are not so marked. . An example known to many are the southwest monsoons of the Asian continent , which can be considered a sea and land breeze of large proportions, depending on the time of year.

When the Coriolis effect deflects sea breezes, it usually happens that they acquire a direction almost parallel to the coast; Furthermore, its winds are continuous and soft, at a speed that ranges between 2 and 7 meters per second. The Coriolis effect, for its part, is what we can see when an object that is moving within the radius of a constantly rotating disk tends to accelerate depending on the distance it is from the axis of rotation.

The mountain and valley breezes are produced in a similar way by the temperature differences between the summits and the bottoms of the valleys. In this case, throughout the day a considerable rise takes place above the slopes exposed to sunlight, while a decrease can be seen in the central area of the valley . When the end of the day arrives, just the opposite happens: the slopes no longer receive the heat of the Sun, and that is why the air descends from them due to cooling in the direction of the deepest part of the valley; This results in the air that is still warm there rising.

Nature

The breeze often offers relief when temperatures are high.

The term as a denomination

In the Chilean province of Cardenal Caro , which is located in the VI Region of Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins , there is a bay called Las Brisas , located between Matanzas and La Boca .

Las Brisas , on the other hand, is a delegation that is part of the municipality of Manzanillo , in the Mexican state of Colima . In Uruguay , Brisas del Plata is a beach resort in the department of Colonia .

symbolic use of breeze

In a symbolic sense, finally, we speak of a breeze with respect to a current of change or something that refreshes .

“The arrival of the Bulgarian striker was a breath of fresh air for the Spanish club” and “This program brings a breath of fresh air to the ailing local television” are expressions that show these meanings.
