Bis

Song

An encore is a song that is offered outside the planned program.

Bis is a term that has its etymological origin in Latin. The word bis of said language can be translated as "twice" , a meaning that affects the different meanings that the concept has in our language .

The Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) points out that an encore is the piece or work that, in a show or concert, is offered in response to the request or applause of the people . Said segment may consist of the repetition of something that has already been performed before or of some element that was not part of the original program .

The encore: a repetition or a new proposal

What an encore does is satisfy a public requirement . When the audience doesn't want a show to end, they ask the artists to perform one more song. The call for an encore comes when the protagonists say goodbye and prepare to end the performance ; At the demand of the attendees, they resume their places on stage and offer one or more additional songs.

If we focus on etymology , the encore is associated with a new interpretation of something already offered . In other words: an encore would imply replaying a song that had been played a while earlier in the same show.

However, currently any presentation that is carried out beyond what was planned is usually called an encore. That is why the encore may be a piece that, until then, had not been presented at the event in question.

Let's look at an example in a hypothetical concert by The Rolling Stones . The British band performs twenty songs, including “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” , and concludes the show. To the screams and cheers of the crowd, they return to the stage and offer “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” again. Thus, this song appears as an encore in the classic sense. If on their return they play a song for the first time at said concert (for example, “Paint It Black” ), it would also be an encore, since it transcends the original list or set list.

Crew

It is common for the audience to ask for an encore.

Between improvisation and the pre-established

As we already indicated, an encore is characterized by not being part of the program or what was announced. In any case, many times their inclusion is planned in advance.

Nowadays, it is common for artists not to offer their best-known songs in the first part of a concert . After simulating a farewell so that the public can cheer them , they return to perform those hits as part of the encores. In short, the encores are “outside” the initial list but are still planned.

However, encores can be improvised . In some cases, the musicians really had decided to close their show and, to the applause of the audience , they make the spontaneous and sudden decision to continue playing for a while longer.

Other uses of bis

The idea of encore can also be associated with that which is equivalent to someone or something , or that is an imitation : “Gómez is an encore Ronaldo, I think he is going to bring great satisfaction to this team” , “It is an encore of a piece of furniture” . French" .

The adjective bis, finally, allows us to indicate that a number in a series immediately follows that same number already used. Calle 32 bis , to mention one possibility, is located after Calle 32 .
