Formula 1

The sporting activity that is carried out aboard a car is called motorsport.

The concept of motorsport comes from the French word automobilisme . In its broadest sense, the notion refers to that which is linked to the automotive universe.

A vehicle is called a vehicle that moves thanks to an engine and that can move along any common road without the need for a special lane. Typically, the term par excellence refers specifically to a car (a car manufactured to transport no more than seven people).

Automobiles, in short, are motor vehicles that have four wheels and that usually circulate on streets and highways ( routes ). What is related to this means of transportation is included in motor racing.

Motorsport as a sport

Beyond what has been detailed so far, it is relevant to note that the idea of motorsport is used above all to name the sporting activity that takes place on board a car . Generally, the objective of this sport is to complete a certain route or journey in the shortest time possible, which makes it essential to drive the car at the highest possible speed.

Another alternative is that the winner of a motorsports competition is the driver who, in a given time, manages to complete the most laps on a circuit. In this case, as in the previously mentioned modality, speed is a key factor.

A multidisciplinary activity

Numerous professionals and specialists are involved in motorsports. Behind every driver or racer , there are mechanics , engineers and other experts who are responsible for the design, tuning, maintenance and repair of automobiles.

It is necessary to keep in mind that, in motorsports, the talent of the driver is usually not enough to obtain a victory. The characteristics and preparation of the vehicle are very important: a great driver can finish a race in last place if he competes with a car that, due to its engine or for any other reason, is slow.

The rally is a type of motorsport where the races are carried out in sections.

Categories in motorsport

Very different competitions take place under the orbit of motorsport. First of all, we can differentiate between races that take place on circuits (whether street or road courses ) and those that take place in sections and in different places (as occurs in the rally ).

On the other hand, the vehicles that participate can also have various characteristics. According to the category, single-seater cars can run (which have a single seat and have the wheels outside the body ), prototypes (cars that usually have two seats and are designed especially for sports motorsports) or conventional cars that are modified for competition .

Formula 1 , Formula E , IndyCar Series , Dakar Rally , World Rally Championship (known by its acronym WRC ) and NASCAR are some of the most famous championships and events in motorsport.

great pilots

Throughout history , numerous figures have shone in motorsports for their achievements and exploits. If we focus on Formula 1 , we find among the top winners the German Michael Schumacher , the Englishman Lewis Hamilton and the Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio , for example.

Regarding the rally , figures such as the French Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier and the Finns Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Mäkinen stand out.
