Alhambra is a term that is not part of the dictionary prepared by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ). This is the name given to a citadel built by Muslims in Al-Andalus , as the Iberian territory dominated by this people was known in the Middle Ages .

The Alhambra is located in what is now Granada , a Spanish province that is part of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia . The notion comes from Al-Hamrá , an Arabic expression that can be translated as “red castle” . This is due to the tone of its walls and towers.
