Clearly Latin roots are the etymological origins of the term aggressiveness that concerns us now. Specifically, we can establish that it is made up of four Latin words: the prefix ad – which is synonymous with “towards”, the verb gradior which can be translated as “walk or go”, – ito which is equivalent to “active relationship” and finally the suffix – dad meaning “quality”.

Aggression is a tendency to act or respond in a violent manner . The term is related to the concept of aggressiveness , which is the propensity to rush, attack and charge. The word is also used to refer to the spirit, strength and decision to undertake something and face its difficulties.

Aggressiveness is a concept that has its origins in biology , a science that has linked it to the sexual instinct and the sense of territoriality. In any case, psychology has also taken care of the matter.

It could be said that aggressiveness is a set of activity patterns that can manifest with varying intensity , from verbal and gestural expressions to physical aggression. Everyday language associates aggressiveness with lack of respect , offense or provocation .

Classification according to type

Specifically, at a general level we can establish that there are four clearly defined types of aggressiveness. The first of them is the verbal call, which has as its main identifying feature the fact that it is based on the individual in question insulting another person.

Secondly, we find the facial expression, which is what is expressed through gestures made with the face. The third is physical aggressiveness that translates into kicks, scratches and all kinds of blows to both people and items around them.

And finally there is the fourth, the so-called indirect aggression , which is what occurs on objects of the person who is affected.

Other types of aggressiveness

There are two other major types of aggressiveness: active and passive . Active aggressiveness is executed through violent and direct behavior; Passive aggressiveness, on the other hand, is exercised through a form of sabotage.

Specialists also talk about sequential aggressiveness , which appears when a person first behaves calmly and seems to renounce their rights, but then shows aggressive behavior when they notice that they are not achieving results.

Internal and external factors

It is important to highlight that aggressiveness can originate from factors internal or external to the person. For example, drug addiction is a cause of aggression. Emotional changes (including neurosis and depression) also appear to generate aggressive behavior.

In recent years there has been a significant growth in aggressiveness in the youth population. So much so that a significant sector of young people mistreats their parents and shows violence in the classrooms with both their teachers and classmates. Lack of communication, changes towards maturity, contact with drugs or bad company are some of the causes that cause it.
