Aphonia

Dysphonia

Hoarseness can have multiple causes.

Aphonia is the inability to make sounds that allow speech or, in other words, the absence of voice . This eventuality is considered a somewhat more serious issue than dysphonia (a qualitative or quantitative disorder of phonation that has its origin in organic or functional causes).

The term aphonia has been made up of Greek words: a (understood as "without" ) and phonos (translated as "sound" ). This is a concept used in the field of medicine.

What is aphonia

Hoarseness is an ailment that, on many occasions, is suffered especially by those professionals who "live" from their voice. Thus, it is not at all unusual that with some frequency the fact has occurred that a singer has found it necessary to have to carry out the suspension of a concert due to suffering from aphonia.

It is important to keep in mind that the voice is a sound that spreads through the larynx from the lung air that has been exhaled and ends up amplified and reinforced through the resonance cavities. The voice constitutes a characteristic detail of each individual as a whole.

Voice

Excessive use of the voice can cause hoarseness.

Most frequent causes

In this sense, it should be noted that, although there are many and diverse causes that can lead a person to suffer from this condition that we are analyzing, we find that the most common circumstances that cause it are the excessive use of voice, tobacco, consumption of alcoholic beverages or having consumed drinks that were excessively cold.

A fairly common cause of aphonia is the breakage of the recurrent laryngeal nerve , which is responsible for routing most of the muscles located in the area of the larynx. This nerve can be damaged during surgery (such as thyroid surgery) or by a tumor .

In short, most of the hoarseness symptoms originate from physiological reasons , among which are the alternations and disorders that affect the second and third dorsal areas and that atrophy or damage the lymphatic nerves, whose mission is associated with the coordination.

The psychological factor

There is another type of aphonia, called functional or psychogenic aphonia , which afflicts patients with psychological difficulties .

When analyzing the larynx of those affected, it is found that their vocal cords cannot join together or maintain distance when trying to speak. On the other hand, they can do so without problems when coughing. Treatment for functional aphonia consists of psychological help and advice from a phoniatrician or speech pathologist.

Treatments against hoarseness

Within the healthcare field there are various treatments to put an end to the aforementioned disease, however, we must not forget that natural treatments or homemade tricks can also be used for the same objective. Among the most effective is something as simple as boiling water and once it is cold, adding the juice of a lemon. A liquid that should be gargled at least twice a day.

Likewise, we must not forget that it is also advisable to eat pineapple, drink zucchini broths or thyme infusions with a little lemon and a spoonful of honey. Tricks, all of them the result of tradition that have been passed down from generation to generation for the benefit of our health.
