Affliction

Sadness

An affliction can be an emotional suffering.

Affliction is the consequence of being afflicted or afflicted . This verb, for its part, refers to generating pain , whether moral or physical .

For example: “The affliction of my neighbors always hurt me, that's why I decided to get involved in politics,” “In moments of affliction, I cling to God to get ahead,” “The accused asked for forgiveness for the affliction he caused to the victim's family."

It is a term that came to our language from the Latin word afflictĭo , translatable as "annoyance" or " suffering " and that was formed from the sum of several components:

  • The prefix ad- , which can be translated as “towards” .
  • The noun flictus , which is synonymous with “blow” .
  • The suffix -cion , which is used to indicate “action and effect” .

Examples of affliction

The affliction can be general or individual. Take the case of a national soccer team that loses the final of a tournament with a goal conceded in the last minute of the match. This defeat causes sadness in the majority of the inhabitants of that country, since soccer is a very important component of the national culture. In this way, it can be said that sporting defeat causes the people's affliction. Of course, this anguish cannot be compared with other much more serious ones that involve people's health or even their lives.

A man whose car is stolen , on the other hand, may experience grief arising from the injustice he suffered. If a person makes an effort to buy a good and, suddenly, a criminal deprives them of their belongings, the sadness is immediate. This situation can be even worse when the robbery is violent.

Knee

Physical pain can also be referred to as affliction.

A physical condition

A physical affliction , on the other hand, can be generated by a chronic condition or by some particular circumstance.

A woman who suffers from tendonitis may suffer from a chronic condition in the elbow area, for example.

Movie "Affliction"

We cannot ignore the fact that the term we are addressing is also used within the cultural sphere. A good example of this is that “Affliction” is the title of a 1998 American film , which is directed by filmmaker Paul Schrader , who was also in charge of carrying out its script.

The film is based on a novel by writer Russell Banks and revolves around an old sheriff who one day takes on an important investigation. A man has died on a hunting party and everyone believes it was an accident. However, he is clear that not, he is certain that he has been murdered and will do everything in his power to discover the culprit.

Nick Nolte,Sissy Spacek,James Coburn yWillem Dafoe son algunos de los actores que encabezan el reparto de este largometraje, que se enmarca dentro del género policíaco. Las interpretaciones de muchos de ellos fueron muy alabadas. De ahí que Coburn recibiera el Academy Award como Best Supporting Actor mientras que su compañero Nolte tuvo que conformarse con una nominación a los citados galardones.
