An adhesion can be a physical union.
Adhesion is the process and consequence of adhering . This verb , on the other hand, can refer to sticking or agglutinating something or accepting or supporting a cause .
To know precisely the meaning of the term at hand, it is important to determine its etymological origin. In this sense, it must be emphasized that it derives from the Latin adhaesĭo , which is the result of the sum of three very clearly delimited components:
- The prefix ad- , which can be translated as “towards” .
- The verb haerere , which is synonymous with “to hit.”
- The suffix -cion , which is used to indicate what is action and effect.
Adhesion as a physical property
In a physical sense, adhesion is a property of certain substances that allows them to stick together with others when in contact. Depending on how it is achieved, adhesion can be chemical (when linked, the elements develop a compound), mechanical (one substance occupies the pores of the other, achieving union ) or another type.
Other classifications of adhesion are the following:
- Diffusive adhesion , which, as its name indicates, consists of the different elements coming together through diffusion.
- Dispersive adhesion , which refers to the fact that two elements manage to stay together through their positive and negative charges.
- Electrostatic adhesion , which is when a force with the same name is created that is responsible for achieving attraction between the different elements.
An adhesion can consist of joining an association or a movement.
Symbolic use of the concept
At a symbolic level, adhesion can imply joining a measure or a movement . It is common for the concept to be used in reference to stoppages or strikes: if a worker or a union adheres to the measure of force , it means that they will not carry out their usual work duties. For example: “Strong support for the general strike throughout the country” , “The government minimized support for the strike” , “The strike did not achieve the support of workers in the gastronomic sector” .
Adhering to a march or a mobilization means participating in it: “The organizers of the protest are surprised by the level of adhesion,” “With the participation of several figures from the entertainment world, the call against gender violence was a success.” ” , “We are happy with joining this day of social inclusion” .
Adhesion as incorporation
Another use of the concept of adhesion is linked to the incorporation of something into a larger group or a certain framework: “The Caribbean country announced its accession to the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America,” “In adhesion to an international agreement, the “province will stop using a controversial agrochemical in soybean production.”
In recent decades there have been important accessions at an economic, political and historical level. This would be the case, for example, of what different countries carried out in the so-called EEC ( European Economic Community ), what today is called the European Union . Thus, for example, Spain joined the bloc in 1985 , after having signed the corresponding and necessary accession treaty , which the rest of the nations that joined also had to sign.
