Operating system

Windows XP is an operating system released in 2001.

Windows is an operating system developed by the American company Microsoft . It is a set of programs that allow you to manage a computer 's resources and manage the hardware at the most basic levels.

Windows XP is a version of Windows, released in October 2001. Its code name during the development phase was Whistler , while its official name comes from the English term eXPerience .

This operating system, which succeeded Windows 2000 and is the predecessor of Windows Vista , managed to become the most widely used in the world. It has adaptations for various environments, such as home computers, laptops and mini-notebooks.

Windows XP and service packs

It is important to know that since its appearance, Microsoft has been launching a whole series of packages, the so-called service packs, with which it has been improving some of the features of the aforementioned operating system.

In 2002, 2004 and 2008, it was launched those that introduced new features such as a new interface for the firewall, improvements to the security system of Windows Media Player or the ability for the email program ( Outlook ) to block attachments that it considers may be dangerous.

Main features of the operating system

On a technical level, its main innovation is the fact that it is based on the architecture and core of Windows NT , being the first Microsoft consumer-oriented operating system to have this feature.

The fact that it offers the possibility of installing drivers or different applications without having to carry out the entire system restart procedure or that it gives the opportunity to use the remote desktop are other features that made Windows XP become a true benchmark within the computer sector.

Users have praised the graphical interface of Windows XP, which makes it easier to use than other operating systems. However, the most frequent criticisms include its security vulnerabilities and the integration of the Internet Explorer browser and the Windows Media Player (which can be considered an abuse of Microsoft's dominant position in the market and an attack on free competition).

Another new feature of Windows XP is the inclusion of the Windows Genuine Advantage system, which is responsible for verifying whether the copy is original or counterfeit. When the program does not pass the validation process, the user is presented with a warning.

End of support for Windows XP

On April 8, 2014, Windows XP was no longer supported. This meant that, from that moment on, users who have the aforementioned operating system on their computers could no longer receive security updates, bug fixes or patches of any kind.

This basically meant that the computer that still has Windows XP installed is unprotected and more exposed to vulnerabilities.
