Vortex

Storm

A vortex is a flow that moves in a spiral.

Vortex is a notion that derives from the Latin vortex . The concept names a flow that rotates in a spiral direction, such as a whirlpool or vortex . More precisely, it can be said that a vortex is that which has vorticity .

The term vorticity is defined as a magnitude that quantifies the rotation carried out by a fluid, and is used precisely in the field of fluid mechanics , as well as in meteorology . From a mathematical point of view, vorticity is defined by the rotor velocity field and is a vector field. The rotor is also known as rotational and is a vector operator that expresses the tendency that a vector field has to induce rotation around a point.

Vortex in fluid dynamics

It can be stated that, in the context of fluid dynamics, a vortex is formed when the fluid moves around a circle , as a spiral or in the shape of a helix . This type of movements can be found in natural phenomena, such as the aforementioned whirlpools .

In a navigable body of water, a vortex can cause a boat to sink, which becomes trapped in the circular movement of the water. In Lake Ontario (which runs between Canada and the United States ), for example, in one sector is the so-called Marysburgh Vortex , where multiple shipwrecks occurred. Some maintain that supernatural phenomena that affect ships take place in this place.

Hurricane

The central area of a hurricane is called a vortex.

The central zone of a hurricane

The central area of a hurricane (the intense wind that spins in a circle and is also called a cyclone ) is called a vortex, on the other hand. That is why we speak of a polar vortex , a hurricane that occurs in the troposphere and stratosphere in the polar regions. It is important to mention that the Arctic polar vortex and the Antarctic polar vortex have different characteristics.

In tropical cyclones, the center is referred to as the eye , the area in which the wind's fury is least. It is a space that can measure up to 65 kilometers in diameter and is surrounded by what is known as the eye wall , where strong and severe storms occur. In this wall there are rotation structures called mesovortices , which are relatively small and resemble the suction vortices of multivortex tornadoes . There the wind blows up to 10% faster than on the rest of the wall. Although they usually rotate around the eye, they are known to be capable of passing through it.

Time Vortex

There are those who believe in the existence of the temporal vortex , which is also known as the space- time vortex or space-time vortex . It is a kind of tunnel that connects two different spaces, either two locations or two points in time within the same place, and is the basis of many of the time machines present in fiction. In other words, to travel in time it is necessary to go through one of these vortexes.

There are many testimonies from people who claim to have experienced situations impossible to explain with the tools that science provides us; Stories of distortions in the flow of time, or people, vehicles, or entire cities appearing or disappearing are some of the most common examples. The majority tendency is to accuse these individuals of being liars and opportunists, since many of them get their "fifteen minutes of fame" ; However, until we have enough evidence to completely discredit them, we can only limit ourselves to not believing their words.

«Marxist Vortice» , finally, is the title of an album released in 1998 by Babasónico , an Argentine rock band.
