Visagism is a concept that is not part of the dictionary prepared by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ).
We can determine that it is a term that is the result of the sum of two important elements: the French word “visage”, which means “face”, and the Latin noun “ism”, which is equivalent to “doctrine”. Hence, therefore, it can be defined as the doctrine or practice of the face.
What is visagism
The term is used in the field of aesthetics to refer to a combination of techniques that seeks to enhance the beauty of the face through makeup and hairstyle .
The creator of visagism was Claude Juillard , a French stylist who decided to focus on the study of the lines, volume and shapes of the face . Based on these data, visagism proposes how to apply makeup and hair to the person according to their physical characteristics and their desires.
The importance of the three-dimensional mirror
Visagism uses a three-dimensional mirror so that the woman can observe how the stylist develops his work. In this way, you can understand where your change of look is going and can even suggest modifications. According to Juillard , the three-dimensional mirror of his invention increases the satisfaction of a stylist's clients since it offers the possibility of observing the changes as they take place.
Those who develop visagism, when defining how they will do their work , pay attention to three factors: the characteristics of the face (shape, lines and volumes), current trends and the client's request .
It is important to highlight that visagism is based on certain precepts that are associated with the qualities of the face. For example: in a person with a long face, color should be applied to the cheekbone, parallel to the eyebrow. On the other hand, if the woman has a wide face, it is best that the makeup be concentrated near the eyes so that, visually, an elongation occurs.
visagism resources
In addition to all of the above, we have to point out that, when it comes to ensuring that visagism offers the expected aesthetic result, another series of important aspects must be taken into account. Specifically, you must achieve balance between facial features. Hence, both the dimensions of the nose (length, shape, profile...) and the distance between the eyes or the shape of the eyebrows are taken into consideration.
Within the so-called visagism it must be established that not only makeup and hairdressing are used but also colorimetry. Under this last term we mean that in order to achieve the desired image, the tone of the skin and also the color of the eyes must be taken into consideration.
Where visagism takes on special prominence is within the scope of entertainment, specifically interpretation. And in order to be able to play different characters, with a different personality, actors undergo makeup, hairdressing and colorimetry sessions. Thanks to these, they are able to give life to figures that have nothing to do with each other, either by age, ideology or forms of behavior, by being the same person.
