Vehicle

Car

A vehicle is a machine that allows movement and can transport human beings, animals and all types of objects.

A vehicle is a machine that allows you to move from one place to another. Vehicles can not only transport people, but also animals, plants and any type of object.

Etymologically speaking, we can state that it is a word that derives from Latin, specifically from vehiculum , which can be translated as "means of transportation." However, this word in turn is the result of the sum of two clearly differentiated parts: the verb vehere , which is synonymous with "transport", and the suffix -culum , which is used to indicate an instrument.

For example: "We need a vehicle to take the boxes to Pablo's house" , "The criminals were traveling in a dark-colored vehicle, which they parked two blocks from the place" , "The projectile hit a vehicle that was passing near the stadium" .

Vehicle types

Cars , trucks , vans , ATVs and motorcycles are motor vehicles: they are moved by the action of an engine that runs on some type of fuel, such as gasoline or diesel. Other vehicles, such as bicycles , require physical effort from the user to move.

There are also vehicles intended for mass passenger transportation: trains , subways , airplanes , cruise ships , etc. As you can see when looking at these examples, vehicles move on land , water or air depending on each case. There are even vehicles that move beyond the Earth's atmosphere, such as spaceships .

Bicycle

The bicycle is an ecological vehicle since it does not pollute.

Other classifications

There are many other vehicle classifications that deserve to be taken into account, among which the following stand out:

– When talking about those that circulate through the air, there are basically three types: those that have an engine, such as the airplane ; those that go by reaction, like the rocket ; or they have propellers, as would be the case of the helicopter .

– In the case of marine vehicles, there are two large groups: submerged ones, which go under the water as would be the case of the submarine ; and those that move on the water. In this last group there is a wide variety of options, such as the catamaran , the yacht , the ship , the jet ski , the canoe , the ocean liner , the fishing boat ...

Land vehicles, those that circulate on “firm land”, are classified into three large groups: those that travel on solid ground, as would be the case of the car or moped ; those that go on rail, such as the train , the subway or the tram ; and those that circulate on terrain that is not conditioned. In this last group are mountain bikes or what would become off-road vehicles and tanks .

The notion of vehicle in a broader sense

It is important to note that, in a broader sense, a vehicle is called anything that allows something to be transmitted or carried , including symbolic or abstract things. Television , radio and newspapers are vehicles of information : they make it possible for information to reach different places.

Furthermore, it can be said that a rodent is a vehicle for diseases since it has the capacity to transmit certain illnesses to humans (such as leptospirosis or hantavirus).
