Definition of

Torque

Torque

The twisting effort is known as torque.

The concept of torque comes from a word in the English language and has not yet been included in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) . It can, however, be translated as "torque" and used based on that definition in various areas.

Torque can be understood as the moment of force or dynamic moment . It is a vector magnitude that is obtained from the point of application of the force . It is constituted by the vector product (the orthogonal vector that arises after a binary operation between a pair of vectors in a three-dimensional Euclidean space).

Result of twisting or bending

In this sense, the torque causes a rotation to occur on the body that receives it. The magnitude is typical of those elements where torsion or bending is applied, such as a beam or the axis of a machine. The moment of force can be expressed through the unit newton meter .

The concept also allows us to name the motor torque , which is the dynamic moment that an engine exerts on the power transmission shaft. The power of the motor torque will be proportional to the angular speed of the aforementioned axis.

Torsion in general , on the other hand, can be called torque. The concept, in this case, is related to the measurement of a curve.

Torque as a necklace and as a name

There is a very ancient type of necklace that was used by several European cultures that is known as torque, torq or torc. It was shaped like a circular horseshoe and its tips usually had sculpted ornaments with different figures.

Torque is also a film directed by Joseph Kahn and released in 2004 , a character in the video game saga The Suffering and a small Uruguayan club founded in 2007 .

The power of a car engine

It is common to find this term in the part of the manual where the engine specifications of a car or truck appear, but do we know exactly what it refers to?

Both torque and power are indicators that allow us to know how the motor works, the force it can exert and the speed with which it can perform a certain movement.

Car

In a car, torque is related to power.

Torque in the operation of a car

For a car to work, it needs an axle that rotates and provides the engine with the energy to perform the force; This rotational movement is called torque. This can be measured from a dynamometric brake that, through an instillation, forces the motor to rotate at its full capacity, while resistance pulls it and forces it to stop, accounting for the force of said movement .

Having said all this, it is worth clarifying that it is called maximum torque, the greatest force that the engine can exert in one revolution, which is developed at a certain number of revolutions established in advance. For example, if a vehicle is said to have a maximum torque of 125 Nm @ 2500rpm, it is capable of producing a turning force of up to 125 newton meters, rotating at 2500 revolutions per minute.

Strength and flat engine

Finally, it only remains to say that the greater the maximum torque value of a motor, the greater its strength will also be. In fact, there is a concept known as a flat engine, which refers to those vehicles that have a mechanism capable of reaching the highest possible torque at all their revolutions, especially when starting.

Regarding power, this value indicates how fast the motor can work and is obtained by multiplying the torque by the speed made in each turn.
