Etymology of the term possession

The etymology of possession derives from a Latin word that can be translated as “possession of something” and is the result of the sum of several components of said language:

  • -The verb tenere , which can be translated as “retain” .
  • The particle -nt- , which is used to refer to an agent.
  • The suffix -ia , which is synonymous with “quality” .

The notion in law

In the field of law , the idea of mere possession refers to the possession without title or document of a certain asset. This means that the person has the property but does not have a legal guarantee that allows him to justify his ownership.

Weapon possession, on the other hand, is linked to having weapons. The law stipulates the conditions for possessing weapons: a person who violates the rules will be committing a crime for illegal possession of weapons.

In the same way, on many occasions we hear in the media that someone has been arrested for illegal possession of weapons . What this means is that the prisoner had in his possession weapons that are considered legally prohibited.

Drug possession is also often considered illegal. Although it depends on the type of drug and the quantity, many times it is believed that the person who has these substances in their possession does so with the intention of marketing them, something that is prohibited.
