Size

Dimensions

Size can be associated with the measurements or dimensions of someone or something.

Size is an adjective that refers to the dimension, body, thickness, measurement or thickness of something . The concept is linked to how small or large a physical object is. For example: "Magalí adopted a large dog," "I like the living room, but its size raises doubts: will there be enough space for all the guests?" , “Please buy a ream of A4 size sheets.”

The notion is even often applied to symbolic issues : "It was a tragedy of enormous size," "I feel a happiness of giant size."

size of a person

The concept can be used in multiple ways. Take the case of human beings : size can be linked to height , weight or a combination of both magnitudes. It could even be related to the person's musculature .

A man who is 1.95 meters tall and weighs 110 kilograms can be classified as a large individual. On the other hand, an adult who measures 1.50 meters and weighs 48 kilograms is a small subject.

Japan

The surface area and the number of inhabitants are variables that are usually considered when analyzing the size of a city.

The magnitude of buildings and cities

The size of a building , for its part, can be measured according to the number of floors or floors it has. In a similar sense, a house will have a small or large size according to the number of rooms or rooms .

If we focus on cities or countries , the idea of size is linked to the surface area or the number of inhabitants . Tokyo ( Japan ), with more than 13 million inhabitants, is a city of immense size. The Vatican , on the other hand, has less than 1,000 stable inhabitants: its size is very small.

Computer file size

In the case of computing, the term size is used to measure files from the point of view of the number of memory units they occupy on disk, which are usually bytes and all their multiples, such as kilobytes , megabytes and gigabytes . In some Spanish-speaking regions, the word "peso" is used as a synonym for size in this same sense, although the latter is preferred, since it is more consistent with the English term size , designated with this meaning.

Just like some of the previous examples, the size of a file can be seen objectively and invariant over time, or subjectively and relative to the time. For example, when expressed in corresponding units of memory, the size will always be the same, no matter who looks at it: a 24-megabyte document will take up the same space today and three decades from now. On the other hand, saying that it is a "very large" or "very small" document is a subjective observation , since as technology advances, files tend to become larger, something that also happens with the capacity of the storage media. , which is why this perception varies over time.

The accuracy of the figures

But the storage of digital data is not as exact as it is believed, and that is why it is necessary to return to the example of the 24 megabyte document. First of all, it should be noted that these round figures do not denote true disk space, but rather generally make it easier for the user to read . On the other hand, saying that it will never change its size over the years is not entirely true, since the disk's file system can alter the result.

A file system is the set of methods and structures that the operating system uses to save files on a disk, or on each partition thereof. In other words, it's about the way you organize data on the storage medium. Since the system determines, among other things, the minimum size that a file can have, as it divides the disk into blocks, the same document can reflect different sizes, depending on the system used.
