Application software

Browser

Application software allows the user to perform certain tasks.

Software is an English word that the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) includes in its dictionary. The term refers to the computer program that makes it possible to execute certain tasks on an electronic device (a computer, a telephone, etc.).

Application , from the Latin word applicatio , refers to the act and result of applying or applying: using knowledge, attributing something, placing one element on top of another. If we focus on computing, an application is a program designed for a specific use .

What is application software

Application software is the set of programs that allow the development of certain functions aimed at satisfying user needs . Very diverse products enter this group, from an Internet browser to a spreadsheet, including a graphic editor and a word processor.

In a broad sense, it can be said that the majority of computer programs that people use on a daily basis fall into application software. However, there are other products that are also used or even needed on a computer or phone, such as system software or utilities .

Program

A graphic editor is part of the application software.

Various types of programs

It should be noted that the products that are part of the application software can be classified differently. If we focus on the distribution and use license, for example , we can distinguish between paid software and free software .

Regarding access to the source code , a difference is made between proprietary software and free software . Other classifications are linked to the use given to the program: educational software , business software , accounting software , etc.

Examples of application software

The Microsoft Word program is an example of application software. This word processor offers multiple options to compose, edit and manage a written document. Word integrates the Microsoft Office office suite, which also includes Excel , Outlook , PowerPoint and other resources.

The Mozilla Firefox browser is another example of application software. Developed by the Mozilla Foundation and the Mozilla Corporation , it is a free and open source software program that allows you to browse the Web .

Adobe Photoshop editor, AVG antivirus , Zoom virtual meeting and video calling program, and BS.Player media player are other user-oriented applications.

Differences with system software

Just as application software is intended for everyday use by all people, system software makes it possible to administer and manage a computer . These programs are responsible for establishing interaction with the hardware , to mention one of their functions.

Also called core software , system software consists of the operating system , drivers , and other elements. Thanks to its interface, the user is able to run other programs and give instructions to the physical components of the computer.

As can be seen, the user uses the system software to communicate or "understand" with the machine . On the other hand, to execute other types of tasks, you need application software.
