Silent

Secretive

Silent is an adjective used to refer to someone or something stealthy or silent.

Silent is an adjective that is used to describe someone who is serene, temperate , stealthy , silent or peaceful . For example: “The man, silent, approached the dying woman and smiled” , “Nora turned off the radio and remained silent for several minutes watching the device, lost in thought” , “The child expressed a silent protest through his gaze” .

People often talk about the “silent era” of cinema to refer to the historical period of this art in which films lacked sound. The technical impossibility of synchronizing the audio with the images meant that the films of the silent era lacked dialogue, sometimes being replaced by plates or posters with written expressions.

It was common for silent film screenings to have an orchestra or band performing live musical pieces. In this way, the films had audio that accompanied them. Starting in the late 1920s , silent films began to lose popularity and proposals with synchronized sound became frequent.

Silent people and activities

The idea of silent, on the other hand, is usually used to describe those activities or tasks that a person carries out without publicizing or disseminating them . It is common for these works to be solidarity tasks that, out of modesty, the individual does not want to make known.

The adjective is also applied to activities that do not have repercussions in the media and that, therefore, are little known by public opinion: “This doctor carried out a noble silent task for years in the north of the country,” “It is a silent project, but it could be important.”

The concept in medicine

In the field of medicine , there is what is known as silent thyroiditis or silent thyroiditis . As its name indicates, it is a thyroid disorder, which was discovered in the 1960s and is considered not particularly common. Among the common symptoms that identify it are nervousness, palpitations, a notable feeling of weakness and weight loss.

In addition to the above, we can highlight the fact that this pathology occurs in several phases ( hyperfunctional , normofunctional , hypofunctional ...) and that it cannot be treated as such. Within the literary field, we have to highlight that there are numerous books that use the term in question in their titles. This would be the case, for example, of “Silente” , a collection of poems by the author Sofía Montero García that was published in 2015 or “Songs for silent music” , by Antonio Colinas and which was published in 2014 .

Likewise, we cannot ignore the existence of a publishing house that goes by the name of Silente Ediciones , which is presented on its website as a “space for creation, literature and science.”
