Sequence

Succession

A sequence is made up of a succession of elements.

The term sequence derives from the Latin sequentĭa , which can be translated as “continuation” . A sequence, therefore, is a sequence of events or elements that maintain a relationship with each other.

For example: “The police are trying to discover how the sequence of criminal events that ended with two men dead occurred,” “The visiting team's goal came after an unfortunate sequence that included a rebound and a defender slipping,” “The "The driver's recklessness was captured in a sequence of photos taken by a witness."

Sequence in cinema and TV

In film and television , a series of scenes that share the same plot thread or the same section of the story is known as a sequence: “The sequence of the child's murder generated a controversy among viewers,” “The filming is suspended since the actress does not want to film the nude sequence” , “The final sequence of the film is unclear: I did not fully understand what happened to the protagonist.”

In both the television and cinematographic fields, it is important to keep in mind that a sequence, so as not to be confused with other terms, is a dramatic unit that has meaning because it has an approach, a development and a conclusion.

Differences with a scene

Sometimes sequence and scene are confused but they are different elements:

-The scene is the part of the film that happens at the same time and in the same space.

-The sequence, on the other hand, is a set of scenes that give shape to the aforementioned dramatic unit.

The Simpsons

The opening sequence of "The Simpsons" changes with each episode.

Opening sequence

Continuing with this area, we have to establish the concept of opening sequence. It is also called the intro and is an element that is used both in the aforementioned series and in the films to carry out the presentation of the title of the work as well as the cast and the entire team that, in one way or another , has intervened in it.

As a general rule, when it comes to series, they always tend to have the same opening sequence chapter after chapter. However, there are some that make differences because in each one they resort to making it different. Thus, for example, “The Simpsons” chooses to use a blackboard at school on which Bart writes a phrase, sitting on Hommer's couch, a song performed on sax by Lisa...

“Ellen”, “American Dad”, “Futurama” or “Seinfeld” are other series that have “played” a lot with their opening sequences.

The concept in different sciences

For mathematics , a sequence or a sequence is a group of numbers or other mathematical elements that form an ordered set . An example of a mathematical sequence is the sequence of odd numbers, which is infinite: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 ...

In the field of biology , sequences are specific arrangements of certain units. The DNA sequence , in this sense, is a string of letters that represents the primary structure of a deoxyribonucleic acid molecule.

Astronomy , linguistics and computer science also appeal to the notion of sequence to refer to different series or successions of elements.
