Secretary

Assistant

A secretary can be an assistant or administrative assistant.

Secretary is the person in charge of writing correspondence, guarding documents , drawing up minutes and attesting to the agreements of an office, corporation, office, etc. The term comes from the Latin secretarĭus .

The concept can be used to name the administrative assistant or assistant of a company . In this case, the secretary processes correspondence, receives documents, answers telephone calls, files documents and maintains the agenda of a hierarchical superior. Typically, these tasks are performed by a woman (i.e., a secretary ). For example: “Talk to my secretary and coordinate a meeting for next week,” “The deputy's secretary informed me that there will be no session for two months,” “Please ask the secretary to bring me a coffee.” .

The secretary as a public official

In some countries, secretary is a public position similar to that of minister , although with a lower rank. The secretary is the head of a department or division of the public administration : “The Secretary of Foreign Trade will tour several Asian countries,” “The president asked for the resignation of the Secretary of Tourism due to suspicion of corruption,” “ “Dr. Pérez worked for five years as Secretary of Industry, although he is now dedicated to private activity.”

In this sense, we would have to say that there are many types of secretaries that represent an important public position. Among them are the following:

  • Secretary of State , who is the head of certain departments that exist within a government ministry.
  • Judicial secretary . Whoever occupies this position has an important role within the field of justice, since they are in charge of guarding the different files or even authorizing the resolutions that occur within a trial.
  • Secretary General . Within the political parties, associations or union-type organizations there is this one who becomes their leader. Thus, for example, in Spain Pedro Sánchez is the general secretary of the PSOE ( Spanish Socialist Workers Party ), which is one of the most voted parties.

Secretary can also be the top leader of a political party or an institution : “The secretary of the Communist Party announced that his party will not support the proposal” , “Tomorrow there will be elections to choose a new secretary of the National Confederation of Workers” , “The UN Secretary General condemned the actions of the Arab regime.”

Official

In some cases, a secretary is a public official.

Other uses of the term

In addition to all the above, we would have to emphasize that Secretary is also the name of a group game that is used to better get to know the people who are part of it and to discover what their defects and virtues are.

Likewise, “The Secretary” was the title of a soap opera that aired in Colombia in 2011 and starred Stephanie Cayo and Juan Pablo Espinosa . It told the story of a man who, in order to get ahead with the daughter he has just met, begins to work as a secretary in a company. And it is not easy for him because both his co-workers and even some of his superiors oppose him.
