Definition of

Rivera

Stream

Rivera can be used as a synonym for stream.

Rivera is a notion that has its origin in the Latin word rivus , which can be translated as "stream." It is a small flow of water that flows continuously through a channel.

It can be said, therefore, that rivera is a synonym for stream (a low-flow water current whose subsistence depends on the season and rainfall). Do not confuse rivera (written with V ) with ribera ( B ), a term that refers to the shore or margin of a body of water.

Characteristics of a riverbank

Generally, the stream of river water flows continuously; However, it is distinguished from the river in that its flow is low and, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, it can run out in seasons in which there is not enough rain, or when the heat is excessive. If its flow is usually very poor and the presence of water is very sporadic, the use of the terms rambla or torrent is preferred, instead of rivera , rivulet or stream .

In the work entitled "Dictionary of geographical terms" , by the author FJ Monkhouse , the term stream is defined with the following three meanings (remember that rivera can be considered one of its synonyms): small flow of water, normally continuous , and the channel through which it passes; in America, a river of short length, although wide enough for ships of regular size to navigate through it; and in certain arid regions of Latin America, rambla .

Its parts

The riverbank, in this sense, may have a tailings cone , a drainage channel and a reception basin , especially along a mountain. Let's see a small definition of these concepts:

  • Reception basin : this is the upper course of a body of water. It is the point of origin or the collection area, in this case the river bank, which directs it towards the drainage channel and has an appearance similar to that of a funnel. In the receiving basin , erosion is predominant over sedimentation and transport.
  • Drainage channel : as deduced from the previous definition, it is the middle course. The water advances at high speeds due to its steep slope , and transports the remains of the erosion produced in the reception basin, something that in turn results in other materials from the channel being uprooted and dragged along the riverbank. Its channel is usually narrow.
  • Dejection cone : it is the lower course of the river and is also known as a fan . The slope is abruptly interrupted, which results in a weakening of the waters and the deposit of the materials it carried. At this point, the riverbank divides into several arms and this gives the typical triangular shape of the cone.
Mural

Diego Rivera was a famous Mexican muralist.

Rivera as name and surname

The notion of rivera also allows us to name various places. Rivera is the name of cities or towns in Argentina (in the province of La Pampa ), Colombia (department of Huila ), Uruguay (in the department of the same name) and Switzerland (canton of Ticino ).

Rivera , on the other hand, is a very common surname in Spain and in various Latin American countries . Diego Rivera ( 18861957 ), for example, was a famous Mexican artist specialized in murals, who was married to the painter Frida Kahlo .

The soccer player Alberto Rivera , the musician Robbie Rivera , the dancer Maura Rivera and the writer Jorge Bernardo Rivera are other personalities who share this surname.
