Magazine

Publication

Magazines are periodical publications that can be printed and/or digital.

A magazine is a printed publication that is published periodically (usually weekly or monthly). Like newspapers , magazines are part of the graphic media, although they can also have a digital version or have been born directly on the Internet .

With the rise of new technologies and the Internet, two great events have taken place within the field of magazines. On the one hand, we have found the birth and development of web magazines that are not made on paper but rather their readers can only read them on the Internet. And on the other hand, there has been a great commitment on the part of the magazines that come out of the printing press who have made the decision to also have their version on the Internet. In the latter case, we could highlight, for example, important magazines within the Spanish communication landscape such as "Hola", a publication called "del corazón" that also has versions in other countries.

The magazine throughout history

The origin of the magazines dates back to 1663 , when "Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen" ( "Edatifying monthly discussions" ) began to be published in Germany . In the following years, France , Italy and England also began to publish different types of magazines.

Like newspapers, magazines earn income from the sale of copies (that is, what the reader pays to buy the publication), subscriptions and advertising .

Currently, there are magazines on a wide variety of topics and aimed at different types of audiences. There are children's magazines, women's magazines, men's magazines, general interest magazines, entertainment magazines, sports magazines, political analysis magazines, economic magazines, and humor magazines, among others.

Classification of publications

However, we cannot ignore the fact that magazines are normally classified into four broad categories. Specifically, four groups are established: scientific, specialized, entertainment and informative.

As an example of a scientific magazine we have the publication “Revista Iberoamericana de Micología” while as a specialized one we have “Solo Moto” which, as its name indicates, focuses on the world of motorcycling. Among the entertainment magazines we have those of the heart, such as "Diez Minutos" and finally as an informative magazine we would highlight "Tiempo."

Ballerinas

Magazine is the name of a theatrical genre that has starlets among its protagonists.

The magazine as a theatrical genre

On the other hand, the revue is a theatrical genre that combines music, dance and comedy scenes. They usually include political or current criticism, and are characterized by the presence of scantily clad women. The female figures in the magazine are known as vedettes .

Among the most important vedettes in the world of this musical and theatrical genre, at the same time, in Spain we could highlight figures of the stature of Celia Gámez, Esperanza Roy, Norma Duval or Lina Morgan.

A colloquial expression

Finally, it should be noted that the expression review refers to the exercise of an inspection function or the detailed examination of a series of things.

"We are going to review the events that led to the minister's resignation" y «I must review to find where the failure is that has cost us thousands of dollars» son ejemplos de esta expresión.
