Bend

curve on road

A bend is a very sharp curve.

A bend is an angle formed by a river , a path , a road or a street , abruptly and markedly modifying the direction it was taking. Bends, therefore, imply a change in course, trajectory or layout .

A new direction

Suppose that an avenue runs for thousands of meters in a straight line from north to south. However, upon reaching a certain point, the orientation changes and begins to unfold from east to west. The point in question, which establishes the new course, is a bend.

Bends can occur for multiple reasons. In some cases, they are due to natural accidents given by geography, as can occur with a river . They can also be created by people so that a path can bypass an obstacle, for example.

Driving on bends

The bend represents a considerably sharp curve, since the angle formed by it represents a drastic change in direction. This entails a series of risks for motorists, which must be properly signaled by road authorities. But it is not enough to have signs that warn of such alterations; drivers must be prepared on a theoretical and practical level to overcome them successfully and without putting their own life or that of the passengers or the rest of the drivers at risk.

One of the fundamental maneuvers that every driver should know to successfully navigate a bend is to pull away from the inside as you approach it and begin to reduce speed before turning. When traversing the curve, it is important to pass as close to its inside side as possible, so that the two basic movements are opposite: first we move away, then we move closer. This tactic allows us to draw a more fluid line , as if we were redrawing the route with a less closed curve, making the most of its ends.

billiard throw

According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), meanwhile, a billiard set is called a bend. The bend consists of making the injured ball touch, successively, two adjacent cushions.

It is important to note that the term "band", in this case, refers to each of the four sides of the pool table , which is rectangular and is covered with cloth, usually in green. While in the game known simply as billiards , the table has pockets, that is, holes into which we must make certain balls fall to score points, in its French variant these are not present.

We must also explain that when we use the word "wound" in the context of billiards we are referring to the ball that touches the white ball, which is the one we hit directly with the cue (the stick that we hold with both hands and that has a finer tip. than the other). As well as the bend, there are other special sets that in many cases are used as objectives to adapt the official rules and create small challenges in informal competitions.

Billiard table and balls

The "bend" throw, in billiards, consists of the injured ball touching two adjacent cushions successively.
