Chiasma

optic nerve

The optic chiasm is an anatomical formation.

Chiasma is a concept that comes from the Greek language, whose etymology refers to something that is arranged crosswise . The notion is used in biology to name the crossing carried out by certain organic structures.

It can be said, therefore, that the chiasm involves the crossing of a pair of chromosomes that are in contact in meiosis . In the development of prophase , these elements recombine. It is important to highlight that in female meiosis a greater number of chiasmata occur than in male meiosis.

optic chiasm

One of the most important chiasms is the optic chiasm . This is the partial crossing of the optic nerves, more precisely their axonal fibers. This chiasm, which occurs in the brain , implies that half of the fibers from the left optic nerve pass to the right optic ribbon and vice versa.

As a consequence of this chiasm, the images created on one retina are transferred to the opposite brain sector. The optic nerves, once they pass through the chiasm, begin to be called optic tracts .

Possible disorders

In the same way, we cannot ignore that the optic chiasm may be affected by an optic glioma . This is a tumor whose exact origin is unknown, which can grow in various parts of the brain and which usually occurs before the person reaches the age of twenty.

Likewise, it must be said that glioma can cause the individual to face symptoms such as strabismus, the absolutely involuntary movement of the eyeball, loss of vision in one or both eyes that appears and grows gradually. , decreased memory capacity, loss of appetite...

It should be noted that the optic chiasm can suffer from other disorders and diseases, such as injuries that, through compression, cause optic atrophy . A disease of the pituitary gland will also affect this chiasm.

Colombian flag

The Quiasma Project was developed in Colombia.

Chiasma Project

Quiasma , on the other hand, is the name of an Argentine technology company that offers consulting and technical support services. Also known as Quiasma is an audiovisual project promoted by Colombian artists Clemencia Echeverri , Andrés Burbano , Bárbara Santos and Santiago Ortiz .

Specifically, the Quiasma Project revolves around Colombia : its geography, its risk areas, its conflicts... All of this gave rise to a series of experimental works based on different techniques and disciplines that aim to address the complexity of the nation as well as knowing the reality of its ordinary citizens.

In 2005 was exactly when the Quiasma Project began, which had the support of different institutions and companies, as would be the case, for example, of the Colombian embassy in Sweden and the National University of Colombia , among others.
