Acne

Acne can cause a keloid to appear.

Keloid is a lesion that appears on the skin from the excessive expansion of scar tissue . When a skin injury occurs, it heals : the eruption of a keloid involves the additional growth of scar tissue in the same place, where the original injury has already healed.

Trauma , a vaccine , surgery, a piercing, a burn , or even acne can cause a keloid to develop. Keloids can be different colors, raised, and cause irritation or itching.

Keloids generally do not require medical treatment. However, it is important to consult a specialist to rule out other pathologies (such as a tumor ) and to consult about the possibility of treatment in case of excessive discomfort. Whenever it is found to be a keloid, the person will have a hypertrophied but benign scar .

Characteristics of keloids

In addition to all of the above, it is important to know other interesting information about the aforementioned keloids that are worth taking into consideration:

  • It is more common for them to appear in people between 10 and 20 years old.
  • Hispanic, Asian or African American people are more likely to suffer from them.
  • Sometimes the fact that they are transmitted from parents to children usually takes place.
  • They can be red, pink or flesh- colored .
  • In order to detect that they are not tumors, it is common for doctors to decide to undergo a biopsy on their patients with keloids.
  • It is recommended to go directly to the doctor when the keloid presents new symptoms or when its size changes.
  • It is advisable that to prevent them from getting worse in any way, they should protect themselves in a special way when they are in the sun, either by using the relevant sunscreen or directly hiding them with a patch.
  • It should be noted that after different surgical interventions, medical professionals prescribe patients some specific creams that help prevent the aforementioned keloids from forming.
  • Surgical removal, radiation or different laser treatments are also used to reduce the size of these skin lesions.
  • Among the natural remedies that exist to deal with keloids are apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, rose water, aloe vera or sandalwood.

The treatments

When keloids are very large, not only does the aesthetic problem increase, but it can also cause mobility disorders. In those cases, a doctor may suggest different treatments .

A surgical operation is possible in certain cases, although the possibility of recurrence is high. Cryotherapy and radiotherapy can also be applied. Other treatments that may be carried out to remove or shrink a keloid include the provision of corticosteroids and the use of dressings and bandages .

It should be noted that, in certain ethnic groups, their members voluntarily cause keloids for ritual or aesthetic purposes. For this, people purposely cause injuries so that a keloid appears.
