Punctuation

Question

Punctuation marks help organize the content of speech and give it coherence.

Punctuation is the process and result of scoring (establishing the signs that indicate the spelling in each sentence, obtaining points in a certain competition). Scoring is also the totality of the signs that allow scoring and the result of the accumulation of units in a game or sport .

For example: “The text is well written, although you should pay attention to the punctuation” , “I don't know who wrote the statement: the punctuation is horrible” , “It was a match with little effectiveness in the attack and a very low score” .

Punctuation marks

Punctuation marks are those that allow you to mark the end of a sentence and establish pauses . In this way, it is possible to prioritize the different propositions, organize the contents and give a structure to a discourse .

There are numerous punctuation marks that exist. However, the most important are the period, the comma, the colon, the quotation marks, the parentheses, the semicolon, the ellipsis, the hyphen, the exclamation marks and the question marks.

Some rules

The use of punctuation depends on multiple issues, including the sender's personal style. It is important, however, to respect certain basic rules so that the message is coherent and can be understood by the listener.

Among the basic punctuation rules are these:

-The full stop is placed at the end of a statement to close it.

-The comma, in addition to allowing the establishment of an enumeration, serves to determine a clarification.

-Colons should be used to introduce certain words or quotes from someone.

-The semicolon, for its part, is required to be used to allow an enumeration in which, in turn, commas are included.

-Quotation marks should be used at all times for direct quotes, highlighting a word in another language, indicating the ironic meaning of a term, emphasizing an expression...

-The parentheses, on the other hand, have the function of inserting one text into another or making a specific clarification.

Sport

In sports, the score defines the result of a competition.

Example of correct punctuation

Let's look at an example: “Juan, Carlos and María went to dinner at the end of the play. Luisa, Juan's wife, did not join the group since she was not feeling well . In this case, we can appreciate the use of the comma to separate the names of people and to include a clarification. The period followed at the end of the first sentence, on the other hand, separates said proposition from the following one.

The same expression without the appropriate punctuation would not be understood well: “Juan Carlos and María went to dinner at the end of the play. Luisa, Juan's wife, did not join the group since she was not feeling well.”

The term in sport

In the same way, we cannot ignore that the term score is also used within the field of sports and games. Thus, for example, in any soccer league, teams add points for their wins and draws.

Based on them, they will obtain a final score that will determine who the winning club is at the end of the competition. In this way, it was determined that in the 2014-2015 league, FC Barcelona would be proclaimed champion by achieving a score of 94 points.
