Spelling

The period is an orthographic sign.

Point , from the Latin punctum , is a circular mark , usually of small dimensions, that is perceptible on a surface by contrast of color or relief. For example: “What is that red dot in the middle of the wall?” , “When I went to look for the photograph, I realized that it was full of small blue dots” .

For spelling , a period is the note that is written above the i and j , and the sign that indicates the end of the grammatical and logical meaning of a sentence . That same sign is also used after abbreviations ( Sr. , Dr. ).

Points in spelling

Starting from this meaning of sign with which a sentence concludes, we have to highlight that there are three different types: full stop , which ends a sentence but not the paragraph; full stop , which unlike the previous one concludes a paragraph; and full stop , which is the one placed as the last element of a text .

All of this without forgetting either that there are colons , which are placed vertically one above the other and which function as a punctuation mark. Where appropriate, they are used to introduce a textual quote, to begin an enumeration, to give way to a numbered list or to establish the following presence of an explanation.

In the same way, within what would be the language we would also have to refer to what are known as ellipses . These are made up of three points established horizontally one after the other that are placed at the end of a sentence to make it clear that it could have a continuation, to signal an interruption of a comment or to leave a sentence in suspense, among other functions. .

Basketball

In sports and games, the unit of scoring that defines the winner is called a point.

The term in sport

In certain games , points are the scoring units that allow us to keep the score and define who the winner is: “The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Chicago Bulls by fifteen points” , “Roger Federer has a match point with his serve” .

In the case of basketball, for example, there are various shots that, if successful, are compensated with a different number of points. Players who get the ball right and get it into the basket on free throws will get a point . Those who do the same within the area that is restricted by the three-point line will get two points . And finally, those who manage to score beyond the three-point line will add three points to their score.

In a similar sense, points are used to grade exams or anything that can be judged through a certain scale : “I got eight points out of ten on my math exam,” “Argentine critics gave this one only three points .” movie” , “The Chilean striker had a performance rated with ten points by the majority of the local media” .
