A meeting of professionals in an office

The notion of professional is used in Mexico to refer to a professional : an individual who dedicates himself to the exercise of his profession with efficiency and capacity . A professional, therefore, is someone who has the academic or technical knowledge necessary to carry out a certain task .

Some examples

For example: “According to a study, professionals earn an income that is 40% higher than what those without education earn,” “For me it is a pride to be the first professional in the family, an achievement that I achieved.” thanks to the support of my parents” , “New professionals have difficulties entering the labor market” .

Let's look at the three sentences in detail to explore the meaning of the word professional and its different nuances. In the first of them we see that it is used as a synonym for "professional" without referring to the level of their work, their academic performance or their experience. It simply focuses on the fact that they are people who have obtained a tertiary or university degree to mark the difference in the income they receive compared to that of the rest of the people in a similar work situation.

We move on to the second sentence, where the speaker is the professional himself and mentions that he feels proud to be the first in his family to have achieved such a level of education, something he attributes to the help of his parents. This is very common in middle or lower class families, in which the elderly do everything possible to financially support the young people so that they can build a better future , something that can generally be achieved through formal studies.

Finally, we have an example in which we talk about the difficulty for people who have recently graduated to get a job in which they can put into practice what they have studied for years , in many cases with great effort. Being a “new professional” is not easy in a market saturated with workers with similar qualifications, and competition is becoming increasingly fierce.

Relationship with "professional"

Professional y professional son sinónimos cuando la intención es nombrar a la persona que works with excellence thanks to his studies and/or his experience. Mientras que ambos términos resultan invariables en cuanto al gender, sí cambian respecto al número.

This means that expressions like “The professional is waiting for you in the meeting room” and “The professional is waiting for you in the meeting room” are correct. In plural, it would be appropriate to indicate: “The professionals are waiting for you in the meeting room” (if the group is made up entirely of men or there is at least one man among several women), “The professionals are waiting for you in the meeting room.” meetings” (to refer to a group composed only of women).

Professional woman computers

The computer is a common tool for professionals from different fields.

Generally the idea of a professional is linked to having a university degree . In any case, it is possible to name someone as a professional even if they have not studied or completed higher education. The central thing is that the subject is in a position to work with skill and expertise , making a difference compared to the rest of the people.

Depending on the field, in some very rare cases it is possible to access a high-ranking job position without having formal studies, with a degree that qualifies us as professionals. However, this is a very limited possibility that occurs in individuals with great natural talent trained in a self-taught manner or in those who have the necessary contacts to overcome the requirements .
