Bow

Ship

The bow is the front part of a boat.

The bow is the front sector of a boat . This is the edge that, as the boat moves forward, is responsible for cutting the water and facilitating movement. There are various components that are part of the bow, such as the stem, the bow and the marks that indicate the waterline.

The structure of this part of the boat is made up of a series of “ribs” known as frames and different plates called bulkheads . Thanks to this structure, the bow can resist various types of collisions and contain the eventual entry of water, guaranteeing safety .

It should be noted that the etymological origin of the term takes us to Latin, specifically to the word prora . However, this, in turn, derives from a Greek word that already appears in texts such as "The Odyssey" by Homer .

Bow types

Throughout history , numerous types of bows have been developed. The different designs obey the engineering knowledge of each era, the specific needs of the boat and the available materials. Some types of bow are the spur bow , the scoop bow , the straight bow , the bulbous bow , and the inverted bow .

We cannot ignore the existence of what is known as the violin bow . This is a term that is used to refer to those maritime vessels that have the particularity that in their bow there is an arch with a shape similar to that of the violin, specifically in the area called tajamar . However, when this area is decorated with a figure, it is called a figurehead .
