Membership

A privilege can be a special advantage, such as the ability to have something that is forbidden to most people.

Privilege we can say that it is a term that, etymologically speaking, comes from Latin. Privilegium is, specifically, the Latin word from which it emanates and it is made up of the sum of three clear components: privus , which is synonymous with “private”; legalis , which is equivalent to “relating to the law,” and finally the suffix -ium , which can be translated as “indicative of relationship.”

Privilege is a special advantage or exemption from an obligation enjoyed by someone by the grant of a superior or by his own ability and circumstance. The term is also used to name the document in which the granting of the privilege is recorded.

There are many ways to understand the concept of privilege. In a judicial or regulatory sense, privilege may be special permission granted by authorities . The privileged, therefore, enjoy better conditions than ordinary citizens.

Types of privilege

We would have to establish that there are many types of privileges, which have their peculiarities and which are worth knowing:

Local privilege , which is one that is granted to a specific space and that does not exist outside its borders.

Personal privilege . This, as its name indicates, is one that is granted to a specific individual and is not transmitted to his or her successors.

Hateful privilege , which is defined by the fact that when granted to a person it means that a third party is harmed.

Remunerative privilege . In your case, we can determine that it is one that is given as a reward to someone who has carried out an action that is worth recognizing, praising and rewarding.

A kind of gentleman

In past centuries, we would have to say that there existed what was called a nobleman of privilege . This was a term that was used to refer to that man who managed to become a nobleman, a nobleman, because he proceeded to buy that "title" or because it was granted directly to him by whoever was acting as king at that time, as a method of compensating various actions that he would have carried out in favor of the monarch.

By extension, the privileged class is known as that which has greater power and wealth and which, therefore, constitutes an elite . In the Old Regime , the nobility and the clergy constituted the privileged class and were supported by the third class (the common people).

class privilege

Today, the upper class is the privileged social group. Upper class is understood as the group of people who have economic and productive means, have access to all services, live in comfortable houses, have savings, etc. The less privileged or the non-privileged, on the other hand, belong to the lower classes: they are poor, they do not have access to health and education, they subsist in precarious housing and suffer from unemployment.

Beyond sociopolitical conditions and the exercise of power, a privilege can be a natural and innate faculty . For example: “Diego Maradona was born with the privilege of controlling the ball at will” , “Having absolute hearing is a privilege that I must thank nature” .
