Postulant is an adjective that is used to describe someone who applies for something . An applicant, therefore, is an applicant or applicant for a position, a job, etc.
In order to understand the meaning of postulant, it is necessary, first of all, to know its etymological origin. In this sense, we have to say that it is a word that derives from Latin, specifically from the verb postulare , which can be translated as "request" or "intend" .
For example: "We made a first pre-selection among the applicants and we summoned those who passed the test again for next Tuesday" , "The applicant who won the position is a 35-year-old young man who has a doctorate in law" , " Five candidates aspire to become president of the club .
Applicant in the field of human resources
The notion of applicant is frequently used in the field of human resources . When a company has a job vacancy, it usually publishes a notice informing what position it intends to fill, what the requirements are to access said position and what it offers in exchange. People who respond to this notice become applicants, until the position is filled with the hiring of an applicant who becomes an employee of the company in question.
For job applicants who attend an interview, it is essential that they follow a series of tips given by human resources experts:
- They must not be late.
- They have to sit up straight.
- They should not be familiar with the interviewer.
- They have to control their nerves, because gesturing too much is a sign of insecurity.
- You should never interrupt the person conducting the interview, you should listen to them and respond when requested.
The candidates or applicants
Candidates for public office who participate in an election process can also qualify as applicants. If elections are organized in a city to elect the next mayor of the town, those who run for office will be said to be applicants. People must vote among themselves and the candidate who receives the most votes will become the mayor.
In the same way, those people who want to join a congregation or religious order are also postulants. In this case, before taking the vows, they will be required to pass a trial period of between six months and two years. And in this way they will make their vocation clear, they will strengthen their commitment, they will discover what it means to belong to the aforementioned congregation... After that phase, therefore, they will have to decide if they finally take the vows or if that is not their path.
Other uses of the term applicant
In some cases, the applicants are not people, but cities or other types of entities. For the organization of an international sporting event (such as an Olympic Games or a Football World Cup ), the cities that aspire to become the venue present themselves as candidates to the body in charge of developing the event.
In addition to all of the above, we have to establish the existence of what has been called the United Front of Applicants (FUP) . Since the 1970s , there has been this student group in Lima ( Peru ), which aims to ensure that students from pre-university academies can access universities by taking the same exams and under the same circumstances.
