The last element is the last in a series
The Latin word primarius (which translates as “primary” ) derived from postrēmus , which in turn gave rise to postrarius . The concept came to our language as postrero , an adjective that has different uses.
The last element
Something that is placed at the end of an enumeration or a series can be described as last. It can also be described as something that is placed at the last part of something . For example: “The former president's final speech once again demonstrated his poor political vision” , “Infections are the final tragedy of all the floods” , “The analyst stated that insecurity is currently at the bottom of the list of citizens' concerns” .
In the case of the president, the example is his last speech, at least understood as the most recent one . In the second sentence he talks about a problem, infections, which comes as an inevitable consequence of the floods, although it is the least serious. The third refers to an analyst's report, according to which citizens seem to have left the problem of road safety in last place, prioritizing all the others.
The last, therefore, is the last or the final . The last minute of a basketball game, for example, is the last sixty seconds of the final period. In this final instance the result of the game is decided. The last effort of a person, likewise, is the last courage or vigor of the individual in question.
This term is not very common in everyday speech, unless it is a conversation of an academic nature, but is found more frequently in literature and the press. On the other hand, it is important to clarify that it is not a synonym for the word ultimate in all its meanings . In particular, we are interested in the one that speaks of something "extreme" or the "end to which we must direct our designs and actions", as when we say "the ultimate penalty" or "its ultimate objective", which are not those found at the end of a line, but the most important ones.
The furthest point
Postrero, on the other hand, is what is located in the most distant or remote : “I always dreamed of ending my days in a remote town, far from the big cities” , “There are many social conflicts in the remote borders of our nation” , “During my vacation I discovered a wonderful restaurant in a remote village in the province” .
A last people, that is, far away
Here we have three sentences in which we can appreciate the nuances of this meaning, which can be used with a vague sense to give a diffuse character to the message. Let's start with the person who wants to move to a town far from the city to spend the end of his life in peace, without stress or superficial worries. In this case there is no precise distance, nor the name of a town in particular, since the need is focused on getting away from his current reality.
In the second example there is greater precision, although it is not explicitly provided: social conflicts have a well-defined geographical location, which is known both by the speaker and by the interlocutors who are aware of the situation. The third and last example also speaks of a particular village, although the speaker does not mention it by name but prefers to refer to its distance from the cities.
Another meaning
According to the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), finally, the idea of postero is used in Honduras to refer to the second sowing and harvest , whether of beans or corn, which takes place in October and is harvested in February or January.
