Skirt

Skirt

The skirt is a skirt.

Pollera is a concept with several uses. The most common refers to a piece of clothing that is used especially by women . The skirt, in this sense, is a skirt that covers all or part of the legs.

For example: “Tonight I'm going to wear my blue skirt for the first time,” “The girl was wearing a skirt so short that it left no room for imagination,” “I'm going to have to go home to change: my skirt tore.”

The etymological origin of the term is found in the Latin pullarius , which in turn derives from pullus . This word was initially used to define the offspring of all animals and was finally used solely and exclusively to refer to chickens.

Types of skirts

There are skirts that extend from the waist to the ankles, covering the entire leg. Others, however, reach thigh-high (and are called, in some countries, a miniskirt ). In certain nations, the skirt is part of traditional clothing and is worn in festivities that showcase local folklore .

Countries such as Peru , Panama , Bolivia or Colombia have very widespread use of the skirt as a garment of feminine clothing with a markedly traditional cut. Specifically, it is considered that it derives from the Spanish dress that women wore during the 16th and 17th centuries .

Article of clothing

A skirt is a piece of clothing usually worn by women.

chicken breeding

A pollera, on the other hand, is an establishment in which chickens are raised .

With a feminine and masculine version ( pollero ), the term is also constituted as an adjective to name the subject whose job consists of raising and marketing the chickens that are used for food: “We have to go to the pollera to request a quote for thirty chickens for Friday dinner” , “The skirt spent the whole morning with the animals and then disappeared” , “My grandfather had a skirt in his hometown” .

The pollero and the illegal transfer of people

In the colloquial language of countries like Mexico and El Salvador , a pollero is the person in charge of the illegal transfer of people without documents to the United States .

The search for a better future is what causes many people to “fall” into the hands of these criminals who obtain a notable economic benefit. And in many cases, when they have the money in their pocket, they do nothing to comply with what was agreed. However, in others they even get deeply involved in activities such as drug trafficking or white slavery.

Other uses of the term

Likewise, the concept has other meanings. Thus, for example, in other places it is also used to define the handmade type walker that is made with wicker and is shaped like a bell so that children can learn to walk without falling.

We must not overlook either that one of the most emblematic Colombian songs of all time is “La pollera colorá” , so much so that it is even considered the country's second anthem. This piece is a cumbia composed by Juan Madera Castro and Wilson Choperena in 1960 .
