Portable network graphics

A graphic format is called PNG.

In the field of computing , PNG is an acronym that refers to portable network graphics , an expression that can be translated into Spanish as portable network graphics . It is a graphic format whose extension is .png .

PNG is based on an algorithm that allows lossless compression of a bitmap . This means that it shows the same amount of information as the bitmap, but taking up less space.

Introduced in 1996 , the PNG format is structured from various segments, each one dedicated to storing certain information about the image in question. These segments or sections are “read” by a decoder that enables rendering (the production, from digital data, of an image that is visible and intelligible to people).

Comparison between PNG and other formats

Compared to GIF , PNG offers greater color depth and improved compression. GIF , for its part, supports animations, a feature that is not present in PNG . Regarding JPG , meanwhile, PNG supports transparency, unlike the aforementioned format.

It is important to note that PNG , due to its characteristics, was born as a competition for GIF and not JPG . However, it never succeeded in replacing the GIF format, in part because of the problems that older browsers had managing their colors .

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to everything indicated, we cannot ignore that the PNG format has another series of significant characteristics and advantages, such as the following:

-It can store not only color images, 48 bits per pixel, but also black and white (16 bits per pixel).

-Its compression is greater and better than the GIF type. Specifically, it must be established that it has two modes: standard and progressive. The latter is preferred to be used with images that are very large, for example.

-Allows you to determine and use up to 256 levels of transparency.

However, we must not forget that the PNG format also has its disadvantages. In this case, we have to point out that the two most important are the following:

-Results in files that are very large and weigh a lot, especially when compared to the JPG format.

-It cannot be used to shape animations, as can be done with the GIF format.

Flag

PNG is the acronym for Papua New Guinea, a country in Oceania.

PNG as an acronym

Beyond computing, the acronym PNG can be used in reference to Papua New Guinea , a sovereign nation located in Oceania and whose capital is Port Moresby .

That country has a parliamentary monarchy, is located north of Australia, its territory is divided into a total of 22 provinces and has a border with Indonesia. All this without overlooking the fact that it is considered a megadiverse country, because it has great biodiversity, and that it is considered the country with the greatest number of languages. And it has 839, although it has three official languages: English, Tok Pisin and Hiri Motu.

Another use of PNG is linked to persona non grata (which, in diplomacy, is used to describe an individual who is not welcome).
