Pleitesía is a notion that is currently used to name the demonstration of courtesy and respect that is offered to someone. When it is said that a person or a group of individuals pay homage to a personality, we will be referring to a tribute or homage that is made in honor of them.
For example: “We should not support coaches who pay homage to cheating and deception” , “When he found himself before his teacher, the young man knelt down and showed homage” , “The Pope greeted everyone present with homage as he addressed to the altar.”
Pleitesia in politics
Pleitesy can appear in various areas and contexts. When a foreign leader visits a country, local authorities may pay homage to him as a sign of respect. In this framework, the guest can be taken to see the most representative places in the nation and participate in dinners and other social events.
At the political level it is also common for this circumstance of obeisance to occur. In this way, different world leaders, such as the then British Prime Minister ( David Cameron ) and the King of Spain ( Philip VI ), paid homage to the monarch of Saudi Arabia (or Saudi ), Salman Bin Abdelaziz , after the brother of this one died.
The term in sport
Within the sports field, it is common for the term homage to be used as well.
Thus, for example, when a soccer team has won the league in its country and after becoming champion it has to play another game within that competition, in some countries its rival gives it the hall of honor. That is a way to recognize his triumph and the work he has done.
Prayer and spirituality
It is also possible to show homage to abstract or spiritual entities. The aboriginal settlers of America and their descendants, to cite one case, pay homage to the planet ( Mother Earth ) through various rituals. Catholics, for their part, offer homage to the saints and religious authorities.
In this last sense, today Christians, for example, have as their way of paying homage to God or to different virgins through various means, such as the promises they make, penance or processional outings.
More uses of the notion
Sometimes, the concept of pleitesía is associated with submission . If the employee of a company assures that he will not pay homage to the owner, he will be expressing that he does not intend to abide by everything the businessman says, but rather that he is willing to defend his rights and express his eventual disagreement with certain issues.
Within the literary field we find different works that use the word in question in their titles. This would be the case, for example, of “Nueva pleitesía” . This is a novel by the Mexican writer Rodrigo de la Serna , which amounts to a choral narrative where the reader witnesses the lives of countless intertwined characters. It should be noted that this work has been presented in installments between 2014 and 2015 .
