Silver

In order to find the etymological origin of the term silver that concerns us now, we have to “go” to the Greek. And it is derived from the word “platus”, which can be described as “wide” and which was used at that time to name metal plates.

The chemical element whose atomic number is 47 is called silver . It is a metal that can be found in minerals or natively, although it is not abundant in the crust of our planet.

SilverSilver, whose symbol is Ag , is usually obtained from working in gold, copper, lead and other metal mines. Among the characteristics of silver, a white metal, are its malleability, its ductility and its ability to conduct electric current and heat.

Among the many uses of silver are the production of coins, the production of jewelry, the manufacture of daggers and other weapons, and the creation of kitchen utensils. It should be noted that, although this metal is not toxic, it does have poisonous salts that can cause various damages.

It is important to know that in Spain there existed what was called Vía de la Plata. This was an old Roman road that crossed the country from north to south and received that name precisely because it was used to circulate the aforementioned metal.

Currently it has become the objective of an interesting heritage and cultural project that wants to highlight it. Hence, various initiatives are being carried out not only to promote it but also to recognize the large number of renowned monuments that make it up. Thus, for example, among them the ruins of Augusta Emerita in Mérida, the Roman baths of Baños de Montemayor or the ruins of Asturica Augusta in Astorga stand out.

Due to the identification made of this metal with the coins produced with the material, money in its broadest sense is usually called silver. Having money, therefore, is equivalent to being rich or wealthy.

For example: “Can you lend me money? “I want to buy a soda but I forgot my wallet,” “The company has money problems and could fire some employees,” “In that job they paid me a lot of money.”

We must not forget either that there are other terms that also use the word we are now analyzing. This would be the case of worked silver, which is the word used to refer to the entire set of metal pieces that are used within the domestic sphere.

There is also the so-called sour silver, which is a gray mineral that is identified by being made up of sulfur, silver and antimony.

La Plata , on the other hand, is the name of an Argentine city that functions as the capital of the Province of Buenos Aires . Located about sixty kilometers from the City of Buenos Aires , La Plata has just over 740,000 inhabitants.
