Motherboard

motherboard

The card that integrates the printed circuits necessary for the interconnection of the different components of a computer is called a motherboard.

A motherboard is a card that brings together those printed circuits that allow the various elements that make up a computer to be interconnected. The term is used in the field of computing .

Before entering fully into determining the meaning of the term, it is important to make clear the etymological origin of the two words that make it up. Plaque derives from the French plaque and this in turn from the Dutch placken , which can be translated as “mend” ; and mother emanates from the Latin mater , which means “mother.”

The notion of plate is used in multiple ways. It may be a table or sheet that displays data or that makes it possible to perform certain functions. Mother , on the other hand, is a woman or a female who has given birth or who fulfills a role similar to that of the one who gave birth.

What is the motherboard

The motherboard is, therefore, the fundamental “organ” that any computer needs to function, since the basic components are located there.

Currently we can say that there are two large groups of motherboards: those that are created to be part of AMD computers and those that are created for computers with the Intel system.

Its components

The motherboard, which can be called a motherboard or motherboard (in English), is installed on a sheet and has multiple sockets and connectors that allow you to establish the corresponding links between the elements. A firmware known as BIOS is integrated into the board, which starts working when the computer is turned on and provides basic instructions to the hardware, in addition to loading the operating system.

On the motherboard we can also find spaces for installing the RAM and the microprocessor . It also has a set of circuits known as a chipset , various connectors that allow electricity to be supplied to the components and several ports for connecting peripherals .

Another important element of the motherboard is the CMOS memory , which is responsible for storing the date, time and initial configuration of the computer when the machine is turned off and, therefore, not receiving power. The CMOS works with a battery that allows it to keep running constantly.

Mainboard

The motherboard is also known as the motherboard or motherboard.

The motherboard and the buses

All this without forgetting that in any plate of this type the well-known buses play a fundamental role. We can say that these are spaces whose main function is to carry out the transport of energy and information between the rest of the components of the device.

In this sense, we have to explain that there are five main types of buses that exist:

  • System bus is the most important bus since it depends on it for all the components of the motherboard to be interconnected.
  • Address bus , which is responsible for transporting information related to aspects such as memory.
  • Data bus , which is what makes the data travel to the microprocessor.
  • Control bus , which proceeds to control everything that is information related to the peripherals and the central unit.
  • Expansion bus , which works with the previous buses mentioned.
