Motherboard

The motherboard allows the interconnection of the components of a computer (computer).

The motherboard is a card with multiple printed circuits that enable the interconnection of the different elements that make up the computer . For this, it has connectors and sockets that allow the necessary links to be established between each of these elements.

It should be noted that a computer equipment is created from multiple components. In a computer , one of the most important elements is the motherboard , which can also be called a motherboard or, in English, a motherboard .

Before moving forward, it is necessary to know the etymological origin of the two words that give it shape. In this case, we have to highlight that plaque derives from the French plaque (and this, in turn, from the Dutch placken which means "to spread" ). Base , for its part, comes from the Latin basis , coming from the Greek bainein (equivalent to “walk” ).

Operation of a motherboard

The motherboard has built-in firmware known as BIOS . This type of software begins to develop its functions the moment the computer is turned on, loading the operating system and providing essential instructions to the hardware.

Fundamental parts of the motherboards, in addition to those already exposed, are the buses . These are responsible for transporting information between the different areas of the computer and there are several types: data, control, system, address or expansion.

The CMOS memory is also located on the motherboard and, thanks to a battery, continues to work when the computer is turned off. In this way, the CMOS memory is used to save the equipment configuration, day and time, among other important data that cannot be lost even if the computer does not receive electrical power.

Although, generally, the motherboard only has space for one microprocessor , there are cards that are capable of connecting multiple processors. The management of two or more microprocessors on the same motherboard can be carried out symmetrically (tasks are distributed equally between the processors) or asymmetrically (each of the microprocessors performs a different function).

Circuit

There are different types of motherboards.

Classification according to type

In addition to all the above, we cannot ignore that two types of motherboards are currently made for computers, whether desktop or laptop. On the one hand, there are those that are made for AMD microprocessors and on the other, those that are developed for Intel microprocessors .

Throughout history, these types of components have evolved a lot. Hence, there has been a wide variety of motherboard formats, such as: XT , AT , ITX , ATX , BTX or DTX .

Among the main motherboard manufacturers, we can mention Intel , Dell , Foxconn , ASUS , VIA , MSI and Biostar , among others.

Motherboard problems

It should be mentioned that, for different reasons, motherboards suffer from problems that cause your computer's tasks to stop.

Among the most frequent, the BIOS may burn, the slots may be damaged, failures may occur in the power supply, the north bridge chip may overheat, or there may be short circuits.
