Pipeline

Pipeline is a term in the English language that refers to a pipe.

Pipeline is an English term that can be translated as “pipe” . Although it is not part of the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) , the concept is used in our language to refer to a computer architecture .

These virtual pipelines are created to segment data and thereby increase the performance of a digital system. It is an architecture based on the operation of oil pipelines , which are segmented into various branches and have pumps to boost the advance of gas in each section.

Pipeline in computing

In computing, pipeline is used in microprocessors, graphics cards and software . The calculations carried out in the programming process must be synchronized with a clock to avoid the most overloaded sections that are detected between two registers.

Segmenting the calculations, therefore, allows you to improve the work frequency. This type of data flow implies that the output of one phase is an input of another. Thus, the various sections or phases are chained like a pipeline, managing to speed up the flow through this pipeline.

Typically, the execution of these elements takes place in parallel, which means that a buffer (a type of storage) is used when the elements are in consecutive positions.

A distinction can be made between unnamed pipelines (which work temporarily and are deleted when not in use) and named pipelines (created in the file system itself, they facilitate the communication of the various processes that call on the pipeline in question) .

Beach

Pipeline is the name of a very popular beach in Hawaii.

A beach in Hawaii

We cannot ignore either the existence of a geographical place that also has the term that concerns us now in its name. We are referring to Pipeline Beach , located in Hawaii , more precisely on the island of Oahu .

It is recognized worldwide as one of the best in the world, especially by fans of water sports such as surfing. And it has truly spectacular waves, linked to reefs without comparison. Hence, it even hosts one of the most important events held in the well-known ASP World Tour competition.

However, the level of its beauty is comparable to its danger. And there are many surfers and even photographers who have died after being hit and dragged towards the reefs by the immense waves that are produced.

Song «Pipeline»

Likewise, we must not forget that there is a song that also uses the term in question. This is “Pipeline” , a composition by the surfer rock band called The Chantays . It was in 1962 that they released this single, which is precisely a tribute to the aforementioned beach in Hawaii .

It would later be covered by many other artists such as The Ventures , The Eagles and even Dick Dale , who adapted it to be included as part of the soundtrack of the 1987 film “Back to the Beach.”
