Epidermis

Skin care is important.

The skin is the largest organ in animals and humans. It is a tegument that, in the case of organisms with vertebrae, is made up of an outer layer (called epidermis ) and an inner layer (called dermis ).

In humans, the skin - from the Latin pellis - weighs about five kilograms and occupies about two square meters. Its thickness of between half a millimeter and four millimeters (depending on the region of the body) allows it to protect the body from external aggressions , help preserve the integrity of its structures and function as a means of communication with the outside world.

skin layers

The epidermis is the most superficial layer of the skin, made up of components such as keratin and melanin (the pigment that gives the skin its color). Within the epidermis it is possible to distinguish between several strata, such as the germinative, the spinous, the granular, the lucid, the horny and the disjunct.

The dermis is the layer of skin below the epidermis. With a thickness up to thirty times greater than the epidermis, it represents a second line of defense against trauma. The structure of the dermis allows us to distinguish between two layers: the upper or papillary dermis, and the deep or reticular dermis.

The hypodermis , finally, is the subcutaneous layer that appears after the dermis.

The skin determines the structure of the skin annexes such as nails, certain glands and hair. It should be noted, on the other hand, that skin diseases are known as dermatitis and are studied by dermatology .
