Perimeter

Squares

To calculate the perimeter of a square, its sides must be added.

The word perimeter comes from the Latin perimĕtros , which in turn derives from a Greek concept. More specifically, we can explain that in its Greek etymological origin we find the fact that this term is made up of two perfectly differentiated parts. Thus, firstly, there is the prefix peri – which can be translated as a synonym for "around" and, secondly, there is the word metron which is equivalent to "measurement".

Perimeter refers to the contour of a surface or figure and the measurement of that contour .

Usefulness of the perimeter concept

In other words, in a figure, the perimeter is the sum of all its sides . In this way, the perimeter allows us to calculate the border of a surface, which is why it is very useful.

Knowing the perimeter of a field , for example, allows us to define how much material is needed to wire it. Likewise, the perimeter is essential information to design the security of a house or a gated community.

It should be noted that, just as the perimeter is the data that allows the edges of a surface to be calculated, the area is the data that makes it possible to know its interior surface. Thus, the perimeter will tell us how we can fence a field, while the area will provide information regarding how we can plant said field or what amount of fertilizer to use.

Wire fence

By knowing the perimeter of a piece of land, it is possible to wire it.

How to calculate

To calculate the perimeter of a surface, it is necessary to know the length of all its sides . For example: a triangle whose sides measure 3 centimeters, 8 centimeters and 9 centimeters, has a perimeter of 20 centimeters.

The perimeter can also sometimes allow us to know the unknown data on one side. If we know that a triangle has a perimeter of 15 centimeters, and that two of its sides measure 5 and 2 centimeters, the third side must measure 8 centimeters. This is a simple rule of three problem .

Perimeter of a circle and a semicircle

However, it must also be emphasized that, in the same way, the perimeter of a circle that is a circumference can be calculated and is obtained using the following formula: P = Pi x 2r. In this case, Pi is the mathematical constant with a value of 3.1416 while r is the length of the radius.

In the event that what we want is to calculate the perimeter of a semicircle we will have to choose to use the following mathematical formula: P = 2r + rx Pi = r (2+Pi). In this case r corresponds to the length which is the radius and Pi is the constant with the aforementioned value.

The notion in the military field

It is important to emphasize that within the military field the term that concerns us now becomes very important. And it is used to refer to an area or surface that becomes essential in terms of defense or security action or because a highly valuable facility is located there.

Thus, for example, we find the fact that the different military residences have an established perimeter that cannot be crossed by anyone who does not have authorization to do so.
