Employer is the adjective that refers to what belongs to or relates to the employer or the board of trustees . As a noun, the term allows naming the group of employers.
Before delving fully into analyzing the meaning of the term, it is important that we proceed to determine its etymological origin. When investigating, we discovered that it comes from Latin and more precisely from the word patronus , which can be translated as "protector or defense lawyer."
What is the employer?
The employer association is an association of employers ( employers ) or the generic name given to an individual employer. The notion of employers is frequently used as a synonym for company , although this also includes workers and directors who are not employers.
For example: «Since Marcos has been part of the employers' association, he no longer pays attention to us» , «The employers' association cannot ignore the problems of the workers» , «The best political party is the one that manages to represent the interests of the employers and employees simultaneously .
In the case of Spain , we would have to highlight that there are various types of employers. Thus, for example, at the agricultural level there are so-called agrarian chambers or associations such as ASAJA (Agrarian Association of Young Farmers) or COAG (Coordinator of Farmers and Livestock Organizations) .
Key actor of the economy
It can be said that employers include the people who create jobs and who manage labor relations with individuals who are under a dependency relationship (through an employment contract).
In this sense, employers are a key actor in the economy , expressing the interests of employers (just as unions represent workers). The employers, therefore, can exert pressure against a government , influence the market or affect the interests of workers.
The employers and the workers
In the same way, it must be highlighted that employers can exert significant pressure on workers. A good example of this is the existence of what is known as a lockout . It is a term used to refer to the action of closing a company by order of the owners. Its clear objective is to force workers to accept the conditions offered to them, since otherwise they will find themselves on the street without a job.
All this without overlooking that there is what is called employer responsibility . Specifically, this is an economic sanction that is imposed on the defaulting employer who, through his actions, prevents his workers from enjoying the monetary benefits that correspond to them, for example, in cases referring to what would be maternity or even a disease.
The rules of the game in the labor market , in short, are governed by two large groups (unions and employers) and by the State. Typically, employers and unions negotiate various aspects of work and the State acts as a mediator.
