Sponsorship

Temple

For religion, sponsorship is the advocacy of a figure assumed by an organization.

Sponsorship is help, support or protection . The concept, from the Latin patrocinĭum , can be understood from the point of view of religion or economics .

At a religious level, sponsorship is the dedication of a figure assumed by a certain organization . This means that, by establishing sponsorship, said organization (such as a hospital or school) entrusts itself to the religious figure and asks for his protection. The sponsorship may feature a saint, the Holy Spirit, the Virgin Mary or other religious figures.

Different sponsorships

Specifically, we can establish that there are two very important sponsorships:

  • Patronage of Saint Joseph . This is the name given to the entire festival of Saint Joseph that takes place on the third Sunday of Easter.
  • Patronage of Our Lady . This, for its part, is the title with which the celebrations around the figure of the Virgin Mary that take place on any Sunday in the month of November are described.

Cathedrals under patronage are known as those that are dedicated to a saint or a sacred event. The Cathedral of Saint Mary in Valencia ( Spain ), the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mexico City and the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Melbourne ( Australia ) are some examples.

Advertising

A sponsorship can be financial support in exchange for advertising.

The concept in economics

For the economy , sponsorship is support that a company grants to an artist or athlete. This is usually financial support that is provided in exchange for advertising : the company pays the protagonist so that he or she can advertise, in one way or another, the company. Thus, a food company can sponsor a soccer team by paying a certain sum of money so that the shirt worn by the players carries a brand's logo.

The fact that many companies and institutions resort to sponsorship as a way of advertising is due to the fact that it brings with it a significant number of advantages, among which the following stand out:

  • It is possible to reach the consumer without having to bother or interrupt them, as happens with advertising on radio or television.
  • It is achieved that the positive values of the event that is sponsored, for example, are directly associated with the entity that has opted for that advertising medium.
  • It allows you to reach a greater number of people through various media that have varied audiences.
  • It shows that the company in question is supportive and cares about society.

Sponsorship can also be disinterested: in that case, we usually speak of patronage . A businessman may sponsor an environmental campaign because he believes it is right to help preserve the environment.

Sponsorship as a proper noun

Patrocinio is also a proper name that has its origins in Latin.

January 15 is when people with that name enjoy their name day and, according to what is said, those are identified as being intelligent individuals, with great writing ability, practical and who know how to make the most of their manual skills.
