Cinema

The surface on which a film is projected is known as a screen.

A screen is a canvas on which a special device is responsible for projecting certain images and the device that, in the field of computing and technology , allows the visualization of data. The etymological origin of the term is unclear: experts believe that it comes from the Catalan screen , which arose from the combination of pàmpol andventalla .

For example: “I don't see anything: the screen is very dirty” , “I want to sit in the first rows because, if I sit at the back, the taller people will cover the screen” , “When my son sees Maradona on the screen, "He starts shouting and singing."

cinema screen

The concept we are analyzing is also used in the cinematographic world. Specifically, in that case, the concept screen is used to refer to the large white surface that exists in the different movie theaters on which films are projected.

In this sense, it must be emphasized that the expression big screen is used to refer to the world of cinema in general, while when talking about small screen or small screen we are referring to the world of television.

The monitors

The concept can be used as a synonym for monitor when it comes to computers . The screen, connected to the video card and through some program, allows displaying the results derived from the processing tasks carried out by the computer. Technological evolution has allowed us to move from monochrome screens to current ones capable of displaying millions of colors.

Today, most computer monitors and televisions have flat screens thanks to the elimination of cathode ray tubes. Among the flat screens, liquid crystal screens (LCD) and plasma screens stand out: “My father gave me an LCD screen to watch the World Cup,” “I want to buy a big screen to enjoy the cinema at home, although not I am deciding between plasma and LCD.”

Computer

Screen can be used synonymously with monitor.

company screen

In addition to everything stated so far, it is interesting to mention an existing expression that is used in the world of business and law. Specifically, we are referring to the verbal locution screen company . This terminology is used to define any company that apparently has a legal form but in reality carries out illegal actions.

For this reason, it can be said that what a company of this type does is function as a cover for illegal activities, crimes and money laundering . And all this is done, for example, through the creation of false invoices.

This terminology has jumped especially in Spain following the discovery of the Nóos Case , in which the son-in-law of the former king Juan Carlos I ( Iñaki Urdangarín ) was involved. And he was convicted of diverting public funds through a company like the one we mentioned above.

Other uses of the term

Screen is also the sheet that is installed around an artificial source of lighting to direct light or to prevent it from damaging vision.

Likewise, the notion can refer to the screen that is placed in front of a fireplace to protect itself from excessive heat and to the human being who, physically or metaphorically, hides another.
