Definition of

Palmiflexion

The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) does not include the term palmiflexion . In any case, it is possible to note that it is a word constructed from two notions: palm and flexion .

Going into the etymological origin of these two words we can highlight the following:

-Palma, first of all, derives from Latin. Specifically, it emanates from “palma”, which can be translated as “palm of the hand”.

-Flexion, secondly, also comes from Latin. In its case, it comes from the term “flexio, flexionis”, which is synonymous with “curve” or “deviate”.

PalmiflexionIn this case, palm refers to the lower region of the hand , which develops between the wrist and the fingers. Flexion , on the other hand, is the act and consequence of bending something , especially a limb or part of the body.

These two definitions allow us to approach the concept of palmiflexion. It is simply the flexion of the palm of the hand through a movement of the wrist (the sector of the body where the hand articulates with the forearm). Also called palmar flexion , palmiflexion allows the hand to be placed downwards.

It is common for this idea to be used in the field of athletics and physical training . Palmiflexion involves placing the palm down, a posture that can enable the development of a wide range of actions . Many routines, therefore, contemplate palmiflexion.

Palmiflexion also appears in rehabilitation therapies . When the goal is for the patient to recover certain motor skills that have been affected, the therapist can indicate palmiflexion in different situations.

It is important not to confuse the term palmiflexion with dorsiflexion. The latter is used to refer to dorsiflexion, which consists of placing the hands upward.

In the same way, we must not overlook that there are other movements that can be performed with the wrists. Specifically, we are referring to these two:

-The abduction. This is the movement performed by performing an ulnar inclination with an amplitude of about 45º. However, we must not forget that in different positions, such as the anatomical position or that of slight flexion, this amplitude can be even greater.

-Adduction, on the other hand, is characterized because it is the movement that is carried out with a radial inclination that has an approximate amplitude of about 15º.

Over the years, a reduction in joint mobility can occur as a result of a decrease in bone density and even loss of muscle mass. Therefore, especially older adults, it is recommended to perform palmiflexion or dorsiflexion exercises.

Known as palmar flexion folds , on the other hand, they are those that allow the skin of the hand to stretch and contract. They begin to develop around the twelfth week of gestation and are important for holding objects, allowing the skin to bend.
