Landscape

Lake and mountain

The extension of land that can be observed from a certain place is called landscape.

The landscape is the area of land that can be seen from a site . It can be said that it is everything that enters the visual field from a certain place. For example: "The landscape of Bariloche is spectacular" , "I want to go to a place that has a beautiful landscape, with mountains and lakes" , "The buildings built on the coast have ruined the landscape of the city" .

The concept of landscape has various uses according to the discipline in question. All notions coincide in having the presence of an observing subject and an observed object (the terrain). The landscape is formed by the natural characteristics of the environment and by human influence (constructions, pollution, etc.).

A cultural landscape

In this sense it is important to highlight the existence of what is known as cultural landscapes. These are spaces that UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) establishes that they deserve to be part of the World Heritage list.

In this way, we can indicate that currently there are cultural landscapes such as the following:

Cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley . This space, made up of about 65 kilometers that runs between the cities of Koblenz and Bingen am Rhein, is located in Germany.

Sintra Cultural Landscape . One of the main attractions of Portugal is this place where not only a large number of plant species take center stage but also a surprising set of monuments, framed within what would be European romantic architecture.

Cultural landscape of Pico Island . Also in Portugal, and specifically in the Azores archipelago, is where the one that is known worldwide for its wine wealth is located.

Coffee cultural landscape . Colombia is where this is part of the so-called Coffee Triangle.

Sukur Cultural Landscape . You have to travel to Nigeria, specifically to the state of Adamawa, to get to know this corner that receives the aforementioned category for its monuments and agricultural fields.

Champasak Cultural Landscape . Almost 40,000 hectares make up this corner of Laos, which can basically be defined as a garden that is more than 1,000 years old.

Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape . The savanna is the backbone of this place, which is located in South Africa.

Peak Island

The cultural landscape of Pico Island is recognized by UNESCO.

The concept in geography, in art and as context

For geography , the landscape is an area of the earth's surface that arises as a result of the interaction between various factors (biotic, abiotic and anthropic) and that has a visual reflection in space. Landscapes are also socio-territorial realities where the natural landscape is combined with the cultural landscape .

The idea of landscape is also used in art . Numerous plastic artists have dedicated themselves to representing extensive lands graphically. Landscaping , on the other hand, is the art of designing parks and gardens. Landscape designers, therefore, are dedicated to creating landscapes of great aesthetic beauty through the manipulation of certain resources.

The term, finally, is also used in a symbolic sense to refer to a context or environment : "The landscape that downtown Buenos Aires offers at night is desolate."
