Ornamentation is the process and result of ornamenting . This verb , for its part, refers to beautifying something through the inclusion of ornaments and decorative details. Ornamentation, therefore, is associated with decoration .
For example: "I am fascinated by the Christmas decorations in this house" , "It is a limited edition, with an ornamentation on the cover made by a famous artist" , "My mother loves to dress in exuberant clothes, full of ornaments". » , «We have to hurry to install all the Halloween decorations» ,
The objective of ornamentation is to add beauty to what is decorated. Its purpose, therefore, is aesthetic . This means that ornamentation can be received in different ways since it appeals to people's subjectivity: there are ornaments that can be beautiful for one subject and horrible for another.
Ornamentation and styles
Ornamentation defines decorative, architectural styles, etc. The baroque style , to cite an alternative, is characterized by excessive ornamentation and loaded with details. The minimalist style , on the other hand, is based on the absence of ornamentation.
One of the styles that stands out the most precisely for its ornamentation is the arabesque . It is also known as ataurique and is characterized by its commitment to geometric shapes and animal or plant motifs that are used to decorate a multitude of Muslim buildings, such as mosques.
In Spain you can admire beautiful examples of this style in buildings such as the Alhambra in Granada or the Mosque in Córdoba. It must be said that the pioneers of the arabesque in terms of ornamentation were already the Egyptians and even the Sumerians.
Different products and applications
Beyond the differences, all the homes have ornamentation. A rug on the dining room floor, a statue in the garden , a painting on the bedroom wall and a series of decorative vinyls on the kitchen ceiling can serve to decorate a house.
In clothing , ornamentation can be embroidery on a jacket, lace on the collar of a shirt or fringes on a dress.
Ornamentation in religion and music
Within the scope of religion, the term that concerns us now is also used. In its case, it is used to shape what is known as liturgical ornamentation , which refers to the set of elements that must be present on the altar when celebrating mass.
However, we cannot ignore that within the world of music the term ornamentation is also used. Thus, we find what is known as musical ornament, which is a resource that is not necessary for harmony, but if it is used it is simply to beautify it.
Each composition can have one ornamentation or another, there are no rules in this regard. Thus, there may be some that do not even have it and others that have numerous. This last case would be one of those that give shape to the so-called baroque style.
Among the most common ornaments in this artistic field we could highlight the embroidery, the arpeggio, the trill, the fioritura, the mordente or the appoggiatura, for example.
